Range Report: BassCliff at Fletcher Arms, 6/1/22

BassCliff

Professional
Greetings my friends,

Today I got to visit another range not too far from my new residence here in the upper Midwest. Fletcher Arms actually has two locations. This is the older facility of the two but it still has all the necessities.
AM-JKLVPhWYyMzGC9ue6L3JAp8bKh2ekngFMUqywyP1jPmj3_KvDEGO6qJaSYDvhdxpdH8QNOAVvOLbZ3vLM15fI2Fj1SnD03DGQrwjz09MKaxP6j50QXZ7OuqwZuzWDiDembJ60a-wBErOYxoq9GT6P8_7Ebw=w1236-h927-no

I checked in and chatted with a couple of friendly fellows, Tom and Bob, who really talked up their Platinum membership. (It actually seems like a pretty good deal and I'm seriously considering it.) The family has owned this facility for almost 45 years.
AM-JKLXQwQ_WgZQCmHaX3EkIQ0pupgmO5hkfiKKLZQJFxR1sE3CkSyvfWAvDwOHX7VgyyFGVLbwWwreUAn05bgN7tsOCHIRVjYEXk5S5Wc5nhHmLPkpZdmvqAurpfLcs8Hre-_VusCTmRIxd8k5oUyNTvn9FXw=w1236-h927-no

After checking in, paying my $15 fee, getting the lay of the land, etc, I was assigned lane #8. It's my favorite lane.
AM-JKLVR8CyG0_ojt-1SGHjY_lXtDRmD36Oa3_fTV23xtb4ze0d2iKwNnMFHldin4BV6ixw4C5h8pRCBM2hRgLXf04h9PsR6wz6Wapi6NtVkzeZgZA2NivJNx0EHLu21h4I3lr1xQahhztt1Adr41nQ2imbiIw=w1236-h927-no

I brought my three semi-auto pistols, XD9, CW9, and P22. For the XD9 I brought four 16rnd magazine2 and two 10s. The CW9 has three 8rnd mags and a 7rnd mag. The P22 has four 10rnd magazine. I loaded them all up then shot them all down. I finished up that box of LAX Ammunition factory reloads. I also used Aquila .22 Super Extra 40gn.

It wasn't too busy when I started so I was able to get a clean run for my first, cold, 10-10-10 drill. Yes, "controlled" rapid-fire is allowed here. Yay! So I sent the target down thirty feet and set my timer. I can't draw here so I shot from low ready.
AM-JKLWY7qzOjYkBYP5f18GZK5I5-XUo5_pMWJk9wgFxXjJ8e8-8ckJeZ9V65GyjaosZJX2gye22emEJy81sI8GQuUlOYZk6iE7rtCOGNqKNIpZmGmf--qNqJdE5rzVjGIpyva2X4x_XmOnWY5XtepRKVSsu_w=w1236-h927-no

I took video of my cold 10-10-10 drill but I must apologize for the continuity. You'll have to take my word for it. I made par time.
AM-JKLX3ogX-XnvP1pB_zHyisHw2kW_LEk-Op3_SE8ZjXANaN7Y5f81kxuQaxEh5VurzZn17JLVD0Q9AINIPuTCN3mH02VlFpLX49WLE4TXLlG1zDpSJXRRcfc22WO4IddQ0nfbV2RQ2cwJc1DY9c2d74QOK2g=w1236-h927-no

As Larry Vickers likes to score this drill (one second penalty for every shot not in the black), I still made par time and scored a 91. Yay me!
AM-JKLU2cekwrI4ZWO63CKgLx5cmmceFr6jZEeJX9wsU5iWxavG1URFI_6IRUltQctD5vu0UU5qZg-_7HTl-DY_NWeIty0ip7HM3A-Ru8GgCCpfw3BmJmqK2Zqe98u_VZH3xr8OuEsh0bOTraGby1oTCyUk6ig=w1236-h927-no

My second B-8 didn't turn out so well. I thought I had timed this run in between the other shooters. But just as my timer went off the lane next to me let loose. It startled me a bit and threw my concentration. (Sure, that's the reason for the really bad flyer.) I ended up slow-firing on the #2 target, as well as #3 and #5. I have targets #1 and #2 on video which I'll post in a follow-up.

OK, #3 is not bad (for me), just a couple in the 8 ring.
AM-JKLVRlJ58wO_OlR4U-ewzgSgZslnFtVeM4DtP3wRu7OOxn56ij_ucPxe5BdJMsoZ0WXW9EW-QGHwn7YYp1xrMTsMM5EKbVjC1cnyKUp2LxgSCb4rrwZpLwovYgjwbhRnf0U2wvy3UBPd7QBXTMi6QCH2luQ=w1236-h927-no

Target #4 was clean as far as the timer but the marksmanship sucked.
AM-JKLUCAQh-aeX-s2Q1Kbmqzqsx1ndrHj9mT_MriKMSeIE48KbrTFxolqIbGAOCrDoQwdfKjvz2KKngxizRHQJoszqbSHNGZmYAORSuZRBOIjCiF7NIzdmlFuebD5SyTB_ZHa2KB6F1w7gVTHx9AoJ1Hby26w=w1236-h927-no

I had one flyer that went off into the next county.
AM-JKLWL2bCvc2SPWKsU5gcfe_AoG7lE7I4F0n1Wmv00y7l3IdKSSDIzMbAfoREfgVX1roO154KyCalRTtA9PoCjTIGBKRCRnF7RucnguZc5MKufYEwCJGe-31JvEH5dWn6VWk6ojJYGMV8XJEBOBlQd08L5qQ=w1236-h927-no

I slow-fired #5 and managed to get all but one in the black with my XD9 from ten yards.
AM-JKLVj4N3tjKEKjqcCZ-QndQeINXmW2SzM-e1JWznUT7i1gk48RYoqk2fnnqvT3hJ8pHvUnLT7OCwHf8dIOml63l_89s5FzH2RRhm94d8ODw4Zn_0K0etbo_WPC_DwRjRlL4D9XcgArGKvAJEQqYHOq58XGw=w1236-h927-no

Much like the drills last week, I pasted on some 8" reactive targets and shot strong hand only and weak hand only from ten yards. I managed to get most on the target with strong hand only.
AM-JKLX4NT_UUI1Fuf9LtBcQWANjjX3hyNTWftFnyKQbTvEiuDaq1-9lUfunCnyRQCk7Y0oUv81iG6mZA-PK7XY6KlG1fqtZ8575q0TSV18M19aWAUCWU9GawsOzCV4o6WA55FjPT49EoHtAgqPsV0lE3gCp0A=w1236-h927-no

Unlike last week, I managed to get most of these ten rounds off of the target using weak hand only. Drat.
AM-JKLXRhXYtLeDvGxoCZFl3ojD6jT8MIxRakbCpvcjSknwAd_Tt29oJPs4QHQ-7HOW7vmg9n8kdQWKuhD_nECa0iFC7K19Fx9swCBodKL2ZCqBwqPMhWBa_gKnQreA0I95qd6kj6Fn4bALKPayxNHt3kVsQag=w1236-h927-no

Then for grins and giggles I thought I'd try ten rounds from 50 feet, about 17 yards.
AM-JKLXAbY1usrl7w35wLz3rX4fNB_LsAm4TWxe56jIwg1cFhJP5GtgPhI4gaJotQC5BAngqPLUTkCxaCA3tewCmMW0T_4fgdzfxF8cMk8Wz4OAcyPMO7TcuE4I_LwAxGadffUfOeDKr7Wuc2-hn3YROixDv_g=w1236-h927-no

I did a little better than I thought I would and managed to get eight shots actually on the target. I've been trying to improve my distance accuracy.
AM-JKLXKW_WbjtDf2RnfUnCp944wKkcNFiWYPPiG4KOvOsgTnOcAK14cPLhCUzfMbb1-yKWEYKvKCFWB7QscJC2MXddhnm2BVYzk6iBSdn4lEBxy9FwIFKZcZp5hpXuaGnptckQbkxQ1XJ1dB_T22ZZNwO1lKA=w1236-h927-no

I patched up the reactive targets, sent them back out to ten yards, and gave the CW9 a whirl. I don't shoot this gun very often, and it shows. I should spend some quality time with it and really get the sight picture figured out.
AM-JKLXqS4fEpfoFDTeZX1v6QD-ZVFqk3dSloKhbDeqk7VXItgqsqRqWcYWkItmopbf5dMH5ZYVd5PMAttiXPK-OXAlRcL4iG8VfdBDWsVkSDzty8mZyEktzJmrP7DMwrDbiTn2BOC8wsUd0SOiWVXO0jeQ0Mw=w1236-h927-no

I pasted on two new reactive targets and did some plinking with my P22. From ten yards I put two magazines on each target. Only one shot out of forty missed the target.
AM-JKLVZfLpeEBVxmtpw0JHXC9h4tp8Zxd3G2zf0iAmkc_mlx-U7snvGXPet2fk4y32uA17-ujIx_ph0HNhSGwONMphUV6zSp_k1f9ZHLdcAsesNYbkJ37iXDNIsnGbibU8SeGP8tJaSpKNcRdC6N0rFI6OmLw=w1236-h927-no

After emptying all the magazines, I had shot 115 rounds of 9mm, 40 rounds of .22, and it was time to pack up my kit. I made sure to peruse the pro shop. Wow, they gotta lotta nice toys in here.

Yeah, you won't see anything like this in California.

Next week I plan to visit the other Fletcher Arms location. That's where they have most of their defensive shooting classes and advanced skills clinics. It seems I'll have to take one of their (expensive) courses before I can draw from holster/concealment inside their range, and then move on to the more reasonably priced skills classes. I don't mind. That way they can get to know me and assess my current skill level.

OK, let me close this so I can link up my meager video in the next post. Thanks for putting up with me. God bless you all.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi!

As promised, here's a little video of my visit to Fletcher Arms. I apologize for the continuity on the cold 10-10-10 drill. I know it's all supposed to be one uninterrupted video from shots to target retrieval. I had a brain fart. But you guys trust me, right? ;)

Nice range report. I need to start doing more dedicated drills. My local indoor range got very popular during the early days of the pandemic. Unfortunately, not all of the new shooters sought training. I wasn't happy about it, but I fully understood when the range started enforcing a 1 round per every 2 seconds limit. Most of the new shooters have either faded away, or received some training, so I'm hoping the time limit enforcement will become more lenient.

I can still shoot however I want on the family land. I should probably be more disciplined about structured training, but most of my shooting on the land is relaxed plinking with my sons and nephews. Even the youngest boys are getting old enough to start doing drills, but we've fallen into the habit of passing the time with laid-back accuracy challenges. My father, father-in-law, and brother-in-law have made absolutely sure that the boys demonstrate excellent firearms safety and awareness, but we've never really stressed timed performance. It's so rare to get multiple generations together outdoors (without any electronics) that I tend to just enjoy the time without any focused direction.

Good posts Cliff. Eventually you might hop on 41 and go north to Lomira and check out Midwestern Shooters Supply (maybe do this before gas hits $7/gallon in WI). They have a modest indoor range, but a wide variety of general shooting supplies: Reloading materials, holsters, cases, target stuff, safes, cleaning supplies. They have impressive amounts of some items, not so much others. Also carry a fair amount of archery and fishing gear...

I like Fletcher though...picked up a new pistol there a few months ago. Their firearm pricing is always worth checking when you are looking for a new toy. They move enough product to be on the front-end of getting new releases (SA-35, VHS/Hellion, etc). Only complaint (if you call it a complaint) is Fletcher does not focus on carrying a lot of ammo.

I'm a bit obsessed with "The Test" a.k.a. the 10-10-10 drill. Lately I've been making it a point to also practice single hand shooting. I also need to expand my drills some more. It's limiting being at an indoor range but I can still do dot drills, failure drills, etc. When I'm able to add the timer element it not only introduces a bit of stress but gives me a criteria to judge my progress, or lack thereof.

Until I got to the upper Midwest all of the indoor ranges enforced a "one second between shots" rule for the open lanes. That's California for you. But the outdoor ranges did not.

I enjoy shooting outdoors and all the different scenarios that are available. I also enjoy shooting with family. Maybe I'll get lucky and meet another enthusiast here who shoots on their own land. I have a target stand for some paper targets and I'd also like to build one of those barricades from a 4x8 sheet of plywood. It's always fun to shoot at multiple targets with a "course of action", timed or not.

I also need to work on my accuracy. ;) A laid back day at the range is quite fun and relaxing too. Enjoy it all! :D

Hey, thanks! I appreciate the recommendation too. I'll be exploring the local 2A landscape here for a while, I imagine. Midwestern Shooters Supply sounds like a cool place to put on my list.

While I was in that Fletcher's I asked about an SA 1911 and was told that the other location had a few in stock. I'll head over there next week. I was surprised they have "free rental" Wednesdays. Maybe I can get Mrs. BassCliff to try a few different pistols and find one she likes better than the CW9.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi guys!

Nice report and nice shooting Cliff.

Thanks Bob. It seems I take two steps forward and one step back. I guess that's still progress. ;) I think once I get into a consistent practice routine I may notice consistent improvement.

Another good one, thanks again for sharing

You are quite welcome. I like sharing my fun. :D
