Range Report: DSF104 Movement Clinic, 7/15/24

Hey gang,

My name is Cliff and it's been three weeks since I've put lead downrange. I didn't practice the week before my vacation nor the week after because I've been so busy with my seasonal employment. But I did have a scheduled defense clinic earlier this week that I was not going to miss. I'm staying up past my bedtime so I can post it five days late. ;) I was using my EDC so I just tossed some necessary items in my small range bag and headed to the newer range. When I got there I realized that I had forgotten my Uplula. Drat. So I just bought another one in the retail store.

It was warm at the indoor range but nobody complained. We all grabbed a booth and made ready. I'd brought a couple boxes of Blazer Brass and S&B, all 124 grain.

These are the newer "speed and accuracy" targets used in a lot of these classes. The fuzzy box is for high center chest, usually quick hits, and the numbers and head shot for accuracy practice.

We started with a few warm-up drills on command, various hits at various distances. Tonight we worked from 5 to 15 yards.

Here's my target in the middle after a few quick-draw warm-ups. I guess I'm doing some damage. ;)

The drills include pivoting 90° both ways and 180°, getting square to the target before taking the shot(s). We also employ "getting off the X" when drawing and reloading. The movement supposedly makes us a harder target to hit if someone's shooting at us.

Here the instructors are coming up with another devious drill to throw at us. We'll do our "tactical stroll" soon, walking up and down range, ready to pivot and shoot on command.

At one point they also spun the targets at us, firing when the target faced us. These were two second drills and we had to put as many hits on the target as we could while it faced us for two seconds. It was designed to push us so that we could figure out how fast we could shoot without sacrificing accuracy. Then we would stroll between the 5 yard line and the 15 yard line.

After the strolling and the 2 second timing, my target didn't look too bad. Some of the wide shots on center mass were because I was rushing too much. A man has got to know his limitations. :ROFLMAO:

Those hits on the numbers and the head shot were done at a distance of 10-15 yards. Instructors Ashley and Ian both complimented me on my accuracy tonight. Wow. I took a little longer to line up those shots just to make sure they landed where I wanted. The center mass shots, I was just BLASTING!

It was a great class with several students that have taken this training before. I kind of miss my old outdoors training class back in CA where we would police our own brass at the end of the session. We just let the staff sweep it up.

I'll sign up for another class next month, not sure if I'll get another handgun class or start on my shotgun and rifle training. I also need to take a break from my new "day job" get get in some practice. I could tell I was a little rusty. Thanks for putting up with me. Until next time, be blessed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Good shooting Cliff. And (for me anyway) you can never have too many Uplulas. I think I have at least 4 now, scattered in range bags and in the safe.
I love reading about these courses you take, and your progress. I too have not put lead downrange in the last few weeks, and it bothers me. It's hard when we are forced to work overtime, and my job is quite physical so I am exhausted when I get home these days.
I admire your commitment to the things you do. Keep on keeping on sir!! ☺️
