Range Report: Failure To Stop Drill w/Daughter, 4/28/23

Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, friends and neighbors, in-laws and outlaws,

My daughter was able to join me at Fletcher Arms on Friday and we had a good session. After a nice, late breakfast we made our way to Lane #3, "My favorite lane!" (Daughter says, "I knew you were going to say that!" :ROFLMAO: ) It was very early in the afternoon on a Friday so the range was not busy at all. We were able to do several timed drills to which my daughter took to like a duck to water. As you know, when I can, I like to start with a cold 10-10-10 drill (From low ready, ten shots, from 10 yards, in 10 seconds or less, passing score of 90.) Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers score this drill a little differently. Hackathorn just looks for a passing score of 90. Vickers wants to see more accuracy and gives you a one second penalty for every hit out of the black (the 9 ring). I'm still chasing that string when I can get all hits in the black. Daughter took the video of my first ten shots of the day.

With Hackathorn scoring this would be a passing drill with a score of 91 in 7.33 seconds. With Vickers scoring I would take a three second penalty for the three hits out of the black, putting me over the par time by .33 seconds. Now, if you wanted to be generous and give me a line break on that hit at 11 o'clock on the 9 ring, then I can pass Vickers' scoring. ;) Not to worry, it's all fun and it give me an excuse to practice more.

We practiced with a few more B-8 targets. We shot everything at 10 yards distance today. Daughter generally does well with her P238 with only one or two flyers out of each mag.

I shot a couple magazines with her little .380. You really have to pay attention with the short sight radius. I still let a couple get low and left.

Daughter shot my XD9 really well today. She actually shot it better than her own. The slightly longer sight radius helps.

This wasn't really fair but we had a small competition. She put five shots on the top target with her P238 then I put five shots on the bottom target with my XD9.

Then we traded guns and tried five more shots. I didn't get a picture of the final result. She shot my gun better than hers. I shot her gun worse than mine. Then we put up a silhouette with some extra reactive circles just for fun.

Then I taught daughter how to run a Failure To Stop drill. She shot hers really well. Her times were a little slower (1.5-2 sec) than mine but she was very accurate. Sorry, I didn't get any pictures of her targets. (I didn't want to embarrass myself.) This was my first FTS with my XD9, two shots to the torso followed by a head shot.

My second FTS was a smidge slower and accuracy was fairly consistent.

After we put a few more random holes in this one I put up a fresh silhouette so Daughter could practice with her .380. I started calling her "Headshot". Poor girl, at one point she got an ejected case down the front of her blouse. She buttoned up after that.

At this point we were out of the 100 rounds of WWB I brought for practice. We had only four FTEs out of 100 rounds, but no duds. (If you're keeping score at home.) I brought out the Garrison 1911 (.45) to practice my usual 50 rounds.

I tried a couple of FTS drills with the Garrison. The torso shots on the first string were just meh.

Again, the second FTS drill was a little slower but the torso shots were more accurate.

Then I just put a couple of 7 round magazines into the head area.

For my last magazine, a fresh reactive circle on center mass and let'er rip.

It seem to be slowly but surely getting away from so much low/left with this pistol. At this point it's surely a mental thing. When I do everything right, it feels right, it works right, the hits land in the right spot. I'm trying to remember that procedure, that grip, that sight picture, that trigger pull, and keep it consistent. Gimme a few hundred more rounds with this 1911 and I'll make you proud.

Monday will be another fun cognitive skills class with lots of movement, multiple targets, multiple scenarios, etc. I think they've restricted the class size to 12 so we'll all get a good workout. Until then, enjoy your blessings and long live the Republic.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
