Range Report: Fletcher Arms Lake Country, 8/17/22

BassCliff

Professional
Good evening folks,

I just wanted to share my fun today. I hope you don't mind. Wednesday is my usual practice day so I headed out to the newer Fletcher Arms facility in Lake Country. I did not use my timer today. Today was for pure marksmanship. (Ha!) I wanted to run the Dot Torture Drill so I requested a lane from which I could draw. I was assigned lane #6. It's my favorite lane!

AL9nZEUiSMpmLoMriEnx4P6JKPoP5ksKXS8dGPZxKFGiXcU9KnMoC3KKeeL1uFypPaM5rytflwYdAtrPseEckZpR1Nhea2oyk28i6masNpLaLC0p3hIgZStbDORB03AEKDNPbnCFA9mt1dNLAX4QVky3Zv84Tg=w1236-h927-no

I was going to start with the Dot Torture Drill but, on second thought, why not put some holes in the B-8 first? I ran it out to ten yards for some slow fire marksmanship. It came back like this.

AL9nZEUPEvB3Ioe6ddTMDupPONKdT_CYmSce6hiOnhJyLw_vrpQIqeLyDu5kenqX9WNKN-9B1Sm-NrNf0AYsddxjCa-zycyRL2ysoIYvAT-7DsOg105Ea_KoP4D5Sjqd_QU13ZcUkJY6KKGahAKLkZORoPi4aQ=w1236-h927-no

Hey! That doesn't look too bad. How about a closer look?

AL9nZEWaNQl-m1fwEhybI4Ehg6oDm6oVPOR36J9iVPqiILN_tO5hW2d_WJcbWCi53i92H-E5IGV0uOCNwqPZ57ES2tCJvcgFoGXYc2riN1uxix_btU1mYMRr7_o3YmIjXGRBwWi8kMCCbhY7Ypz3CBX-DBaVFw=w1236-h927-no

If you give me the line breaks, that's nine shots in the 10 ring. They're all just a smidge left. Maybe still too much trigger finger?

Then I taped on my Dot Torture Drill target, sent it out to five yards, and put five shots on dot #1. Meh. You'd think I couldn't count. Only two hits in the circle.

OK, that's 50 rounds with not a lot to show for it. Let's shoot some more B-8 targets. I told the friendly touch control to sent it back out to ten yards.

Oh man! Now I have as many hits out of the black as I have in. I'm going to give it up for the day. I shot 100+ rounds with my XD9. I'm not even going to shoot my P22 today. I guess I felt a little better when I looked at my B-8 "target holder".

Still, not my best effort today. I've shot better. But it was not to be this afternoon. I hope your range trips this week are more productive. I guess I felt a little off today and it showed. Thanks for coming along. Sorry to disappoint. I'll do better next time. :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi,

Try workimg from static stance.
No draw
Old school pistol out front.
Breath, grip, trigger straight back .
Pure accuracy.
Master the dot, then go back to draw fire, then work the timer back in

Thanks! I was using the draw only during the Dot Torture Drill. Next week I'll make it even more basic. I think I was just a bit fatigued today. But that's OK. You just never know what shape you'll be in if/when you ever have to defend yourself. ;)

You have proven you can hit an 8” B8 from 10 yards.. with kill shots. With good effect.

If your looking to improve your groupings on the B8s and accuracy, then you need to go back to pure fundamentals.
Grip
Stance
Trigger pull
Breathing

Ditch the draw or Do your draw in super slow motion
Break down where the improvement can come on the shot.

Bring an instructor in and have them evaluate and work with you.

For me, knowing that I can put 10 shots in a ragged group with relative ease really helps me to speed things up. Because even though I know my group is going to open up I also know that I am going to stay in the black - I shoot a 4 inch target at 10 yds. A B8 feels pretty big in comparison. It’s all about having the confidence to know you can put your round where you want to. For instance, I’ll shoot a large ragged hole in the center-ish of the target. I will then target the unshot sections around the perimeter of the target.

I’d like to see you shoot with a 1911 or an X5 Legion because I think your results would look a lot different.

Good shooting! For defensive purposes if you were to hold those targets up to your chest all your shots would probably be in the lethal zone. It is great to have tight groups, but it takes a lot of practice and skill. However, there are a lot of folks out there that will never reach the skill level that you have now. Keep working. If you believe, you can succeed.

I love reading your range reports! You are able to convey a lot of personality over text. I think any shooting is better than none. Plenty of to be proud of there! You got the right mind set though and that's always keep learning.
I completely agree with this. I like to see the attention to detail. When my company sent us all home to work remotely in 2020 I took full advantage and as a noob would go to the range 2-3 times a week. Sometimes I’d be thrilled with the result and other times completely vexed. I like seeing the travails of people on that same journey. We’re all comrades in our passion for our firearms, but also that elusive next step on the skill ladder.

Agree 100%

He is also trying to consistently improve his 10-10-10 drill.
Unless you break down the fundementals of where the hang up is, it will be hard to change the outcome.

Never said he was a bad shot.
What I am trying to convey is his desire improve his 10-10-10 drill that he always says “drat” on

So you have only been shooting and buying guns since the pandemic started?

Agree with the detail of your reports. Some days just aren't yours but the silver lining you would have with high probability protected what's yours. I always practice to ensure my ability to stop a threat but prefer each bullet to hit the same place. I realize that's as likely as my 50 (14 birdies and 4 eagles on my next 18) :D
