Range Report: Fletcher Arms Lake Country, 8/25/22

BassCliff

Professional
Greetings and salutations my friends and neighbors!

I'm still quite enamored with my drive to this range. It's not at all like my old range where I used to train and practice. Instead of mountains, dirt, rocks, dry creek beds, scrub brush, and tumbleweeds, I get lots of green, trees, grass, even corn fields, lakes and rivers with water in them! I've been a city boy for too long.

Today I brought out my entire little arsenal, left my timer at home (hear that @KillerFord1977?) , I took off my holster, and practiced pure slow fire marksmanship, as much as these old eyes would allow. I usually alternate between the two Fletcher Arms ranges of which I'm a member but today I visited the newer facility again so I wouldn't have to guess at the target distance. I was assigned lane #12, my favorite lane!

Like I said, my entire arsenal; Rough Rider .22 cowboy gun, P22, CW9, XD9. It's been a while since a couple of these have seen the range.

The newer facility has this fancy electronic gizmo so I don't have to "guesstimate" the distance. The older facility has the analog target carriers. Today I practiced with my XD at 20 yards using the small-ish 12x18 silhouettes.

I was thinking that this smaller silhouette at 20 yards would be similar to shooting a full size at 40 yards. Sort of. Yes, I'm thinking of the "Dicken" drill that's in vogue.

We'll just run through these targets right quick. I took no warm ups. I managed to get eight hits on the first target.

Target #2, looks like eight hits again, just barely. I just barely grazed the "Made" in USA on the bottom. Yick.

AL9nZEW3RqionFXCl99g9VAJu4451_RZEV7ahOf3b79YgRm3QlZ_oha5Ju4CUI6USJZly6Y9gB4oMKeVjDileFgqrCZ3XwBqBJwT_ry27jam57Xq3dPCNNPKB8cZer5zVzuQNhj5L1wpqKy8Oad6f9FX4UOHlw=w1236-h927-no

I know these targets are starting to look ugly because of the painter's tape patches. Sorry. Target #3 looks like I got all ten hits much more centered.

AL9nZEUo_vyVPrWxezyYQB81z7AGGN1Fe5LWyC_od9KHN2tv7_b-ZG76FxXh1qNkVj8TKOsnKxFyxVxFSVFpnotaHl3VJCXlQ3tbKt2xzWH4PAcYsd9S5jUWGZyXHjPCmpZSpXR9mIZTadS93asmWhyw4aWDcg=w1236-h927-no

Target #4 look like it has ten hits with a trail of hits going low but still center mass...-ish.

AL9nZEX34QqvxoJwQO0AfsIJZIrIuIscICeTqAQEGyzTPZoZsXsuenyXTUwVfOFUmnqP-FjX_2R9MqT38gCvUWZ9DNHBFpkc4x-3DJT7Nk4zs90WYoN86jPlaCsUFTUmXL12NZueqV5fclqjD4OzRw6VXyJUNQ=w1236-h927-no

I start to fall apart on target #5. There's only seven hits on the paper, again on the "Made" in USA in the lower left corner.

AL9nZEUr0Dtzqe-dDWJCTzYWmtEsOtdGefUuXYuLxT5m_gljSly3E2MyPyDBhDXOtCDvdHiFbdKJ6M0fMjo033u41wWOgtfJWTvJhzm9ru3WHk5A1hfOg8jbhC7iTxfpm0FGE-l0PT463qeTEeAnpa9oEgtk1g=w1236-h927-no

OK, we'll try one more magazine with this gun at this distance to try and redeem myself. There's nine pretty good hits on the paper.

AL9nZEVjaik7qU6Faq7WJbJYQFrDncdWVTTw2-q3Ca3LkEClEeI5CckK80hArB6Qn306UwkxnKYdtPFv5FHTA831EIEMJTs8jPn_vLT_3sjS6NvfB7EMIY3LiH84gVoX7CN-e071N9qcmUtB1AtoESmU5qD4OQ=w1236-h927-no

Then I felt like plinking with my little cowboy gun. Here's the first six shots at ten yards.

AL9nZEW2wZ_glxAXCoFKzsyCdI_pKA5L8zDaKRbUTpZPXN53FRK6wR7__-HGx8NmidCgdKu-cMtb9pppGUgvqOuu1T0UrsDP7tRcLhP8mSDFPJuLgknd_GngsZDYIhlcBTWp1yU0SK5ynirFwOtGH2JpVx7SbQ=w1236-h927-no

I can do better than that. The sights on this little pistol are pretty dang good. You have to watch out for that hair trigger. Sometimes I'll pop one off when I'm not really ready, hence the bad flyer.

AL9nZEUrnaQf3UGzQPMwIWlMXv9uIaJXRU1A7NG6oX44khBjHLgME0UQphxIyCHFd0Q7vVCWI0h8gJ56E5e5S1dHfpaIb2aS1cO9fkpzqTqm8ri2kcwiWoGStY2iozxLsPf5KZxyCXUq4jFJPtW7YQep8y0LhQ=w1236-h927-no

Dang! This is fun, the whole procedure, loading, cocking, firing, unloading, rinse and repeat for another six or seven cylinders. I must take care with the hair trigger to tame those flyers.

Then I shot about five magazines with the CW9. I had just installed the MCARBO trigger spring kit. I did a little laser practice with it the night before and really liked the modification. Believe it or not, this is better than I usually shoot this pistol cold. At least all seven shots are on the paper.

AL9nZEWAoZMuqOY9sbYXai2Ss5auwofiya9kEx0c4jQC4IQ0OkoZC4XFDH6cAprQlF524DBd3hPcIfyZIT14bfdcfuyr7dCOzO5C4lPSnAUkEBLjAF6UAheaylJmbdG4EzkZIS2foeq26tu_oTfvWkWLS0oU9Q=w1236-h927-no

The second magazine has a little better placement. With the lighter trigger it's easier to keep the sight picture through the long pull.

AL9nZEWkeyhPqHrA0Ho00jXbY5LCEeW4K9n-gPPJ8Ij9nIJQSh6MJr9P6Nw9YY6AvyDjvWMCapYpnEFgoUCXegtFA49n6ZDIec0VyYn761OMY2F9pQtmQ4tWDmTxkrIU2a_UuIn2X08zST2ETjAKo3J8JOxwmw=w1236-h927-no

Target #3 with the CW9 is about the same. I just need more practice.

AL9nZEXsl0oBQtrkW_MgX9F78ZLNCSHd2jSEtXdsxS0r-iGHK7kuKJ2N3VyhBE1uFGKF598_19dyIA3QIbVOfe2xe_P7asEojJzNN-GCtIq2gBKxjPFoBVn4PSeqPWR3sO-uYvHlCNurpo0rmY0zFC5ozzKBxg=w1236-h927-no

Target #4 shows some incremental improvement, perhaps. Next time I'll try adjusting my grip on this smaller pistol.

AL9nZEWIgmpQ1IjU_-q7mkZSlcAWRI2dSe-XKI1ksGXuL4wT_4czrB-msrtIHTdJU7Q-7Wy4IVdKNJbkeArfEa2q8dn1s9vdWHRZxvfkci4-AnE5gUsnCAvwJKyqICcqW2GT5Whs3De0gtrWs2OA8-rYDE5PSA=w1236-h927-no

Now it's time for some more plinking fun with the P22. I think I'll adjust the rear sight back to the left a little bit.

AL9nZEU06q6eCx88pEQuTAHno3s6f9BMhkf1lW59Nxnl4cHxK2US6MbRwzU3e9PbtugydBVuoMfNCrvqYihrZJrk2MvEKSyvTd00ySmIWojxn7CErpXaEjid3E4Lng-u1EtRz_mTQhZig03nRZWRserX8Ry7lw=w1236-h927-no

OK, I'm having way too much fun now. This pistol really liked the Winchester .22 ammo I brought today. It was too easy to do mag dumps.

AL9nZEWUSDZnahyxKWhi1qT6GPz64RZnot7f21fjdjWRVSjQqRo54M6ZBow2B7gZsc9leFRdhFD61gBZkzK9XcqgrN0UMMUl3GIeOMKfFFBaHVXCdtTNL0aeFQZzr6Wu1gY6AtA-uX7WglXW1uQ0Nb7Upo1pKA=w1236-h927-no

Oops, sorry. I held up the CW9 when it should've been the P22 for that last picture. Anyway, it was a fun and somewhat productive session. I'll practice more fundamentals at 20 yards and see how well I progress. I have another self-defense training session scheduled for the end of September, a "shoot-n-shoot" clinic. That should be fun. In the meantime I hope all of you have one single hole in your targets at the end of your range trips.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
