Greetings friends!
Wednesday is my usual practice day at the range and yesterday was no exception. This week I slid into the older Fletcher Arms facility thinking I'd also use their short range (only 17 feet), but I didn't. I guess I was having too much fun on the longer range, between 10 and 25 yards. I was going to use the short range for a dot torture drill, but I forgot to bring those targets. Shucks.
It's always nice to go where everybody knows your name. Bob and Mike both said "Hey Cliff!". They gave me lane #7. It's my favorite lane!
I had a practice plan today. The plan was to shoot about half and half, B-8 targets at 10 yards and the 12x18 silhouettes at 25 yards. I also brought along Mrs. BassCliff's CW9 in order to practice with it more. It also just needs to put more rounds through it to smooth out the trigger and such. Still, I'm planning to install the M-Carbo trigger spring kit for it. But I digress.
Since the target carriers are analog you sort of have to guess where the 30 foot mark is. I always run over to lane #1 or #2 to see if I'm lined up close enough with the line on the wall. But what's a foot or two between friends, right?
I was able to shoot at my first B-8 with a cold 10-10-10 drill. I try to start all my practice session with "The Test". Here's the results. Whatta ya think?
Can I count that 2 o'clock hit on the 9 ring as a line break?
If so, I had a passing score. If not, I was pretty dang close. B-8 targets #2 and #3 were shot slow fire, un-timed. #2 looked pretty good but I let one get really low on #3. Otherwise, I think I see some marginal improvement over last week. Can I count 8 shots in the 10 ring?
Only six shots in the 10 ring on target #3.
Then for grins and giggles, I sent a 1/3 size USPSA target out to 10 yards and tried to get them all in the A zone. I guess I need a little work.
Here's the video of my first four targets. Please tell me how to shoot better.
Then I shot a few B-8 targets at 10 yards with the CW9. Wow, I am not used to that long DA trigger pull. Here's an 8 round magazine, most are on the paper.
Ouch! Target #6 was even more low and left, an 8 round magazine with two off the paper.
Here's the 7 round magazine on the #7 target, still with two off the paper. Drat.
OK, let's move on to 25 yard practice with my XD9. Only 8 out of 10 made it on the target and only 5 in center mass. Yuck. Eli Dicken would be so disappointed.
I patched it up, sent it back out to 25 yards, and tried to put ten more holes in it. I didn't quite make it. If you were generous you might give me seven hits on the paper, maybe three or four on center mass.
Aww, c'mon! I'm supposed to be better than this! Let's see, it looks like this next target has eight hits on the target, one is definitely not on center mass.
Let's patch'em up and try it one more time. OK, this looks like at least nine on center mass. I guess practice helps.
At 25 yards any little deviation from the perfect sight picture gets magnified exponentially. I will be practicing more from this distance.
Next I wanted to shoot the 12x18 reactives from 10 yards using the CW9. Here's an 8 round magazine with all good center mass hits.
And another eight round magazine with seven hits on center mass. (I don't know why one hit flew high and right.) I guess Mrs. BassCliff can use this little pistol for self defense.
Then I put up a fresh silhouette at 10 yards and shot the last four 9mm cartridges from my CW9. I finished with 50 rounds through my P22. I really need to take this little pistol a little more seriously. This is what the target looked like after putting two mags on the center mass bullseye and one mag each on the dots and the head bullseye.
If you get the hold right, the P22 is pretty dang accurate. I just keep forgetting what sight picture works best. Pffft!
Anyway, it was a fun session and I appreciate you guys coming along. We'll see if I can do better next week. Until then, thanks for putting up with me. God bless.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
