Range Report: Fletcher Practice and NGD, 2/10/23

Hey guys!

It's me! Your favorite old noob, running on about all the fun he's having practicing at the range whenever he wants and ordering ammo online for delivery to his front door. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it. You can take the boy out of California but you can't take California out of the boy. Well, at least my state of mind is much more middle America these days and the people I'm meeting are much more normal. Ya know? ;)

Mrs. BassCliff was planning to go with me today but tweaked her wrist. It was hurting and she though the recoil would be too uncomfortable for her. I went solo. But that's OK, I like to stay a little longer at the range than the Mrs. We were going to start on the short range because it's been a while since she's practiced. I had some red B-27 silhouettes for Mrs. BassCliff to practice self-defense with. Best laid plans.... Instead I started on the long range, my favorite lane #8, and used my standard B-8 and small silhouette targets.

The range wasn't busy so I started with a 10-10-10 drill, trying my best Ken Hackathorn impersonation. :ROFLMAO:

One of these days I'm going to get all of the hits inside the black so I don't have to take the time penalty. This was my only timed target today.

I wanted to count six hits in the 10 ring but that one hole at 11 o'clock is not really a line break. Drat.

Riddle me this: How can I shoot the above target, as fast as I can, leaving only two hits out of the 9 ring, then turn around on the next target, slow fire, and end up with this? Hunh?

I gathered myself and sent out target #3. It came back with a group more like I'm used to.

AMWts8DAh0TMSZV8_0NtakuEGR_2AmTxFT08h78VpObC-XGo98sdOv0UMD8BtWUZedFifxIUL8r38G_mpOZ4h0IONMxjYeUOT4pbd6EMHwWE8UqjHxaNJDzaywaEQVOFx6o9xVIgnHxj3DZsNrRXLTO4cGEaqw=w1236-h927-s-no

The next few targets were more of the same, perhaps getting progressively worse as I started concentrating too hard on grip, stance, sight picture, etc.

I'm not even going to show you target #7 because it's so bad. I decided to change targets so as to concentrate on something else. I'll shoot for the alpha zone and the 4" circles.

AMWts8B-1KqpiQ0urwVWmgNR0ZLTVmfcBA0OCEIV_ZeFGieGYFg-fiw5aGBMEsTnEfbgUsZLhj8WOhNXmxknVbPEdXiTizVtmU-5PygqGufyTcgAbNLmdrAKaKHYlh-TCcK2WHFO5kwBV778W2V9PV0UJNjpGg=w1236-h927-s-no

After ten shots on each the target came back looking like this. I do believe the right circle, shot last (I tried real hard), has 9 hits on it with one flyer really low left, near the sheet of paper.

AMWts8CZ_SJE6Ih042CkIdyBT1n7i64ffndRjEwhTDObNbFwrhARa9INK3WJ1RDxYJKV9KT2eooqQ7IDQmvykcKaVPslLAt-v1oFfVpm66SGVtYNCjnu20WrXKMBM_kJ23iR4esdhgxO8NEcJ-v43fnjHgR_iA=w1236-h927-s-no

And that finished the 100 rounds of 9mm I had brought for practice. All I can say is, I won't win any marksmanship competitions but I should be able to stop a threat. Next week I'll try to remember what I did right and do that some more. Then I turned my attention to the Garrison. I thought I'd try something a little different. I brought two of my 12x18 reactive silhouette targets. I'll put 25 rounds in each of them hoping for a big ragged hole. Here's goes nothing.

At least they're all on the paper. My ragged hole is still just a little low left. Let's try one more target.

About the same except I had one hit right in the red bullseye. I'll try to remember how I did that and repeat it next week. Maybe I should stop blinking every time I pull the trigger. (j/k!!!) And because I had a little time before Mrs. BassCliff got home with the granddaughters, I loaded up 40 rounds of .22LR for my P22. I tried to put 30 rounds on the big bullseye and 10 rounds on the head.

Dang! But if it ain't fun to rip through a whole magazine with this little pistol. I promise, next time I will try to be more accurate with this little plinker. I promise. Really.

Oh yeah! I picked up my first long gun today. I wanted a cheap plinker, something I could teach the granddaughters with this summer. This is just about the cheapest gun you can buy, a Rossi RS22. I also picked up another magazine because these ship with only one.

I have seen this rifle on sale for $99 but I missed that sale. I paid $125 for this one. It's got adjustable fiber optic sights and weighs almost nothing. It'll be a fun little shooter. I did not shoot it today. I wanted to take it home and clean it up first. I'll let you know. I think my next purchase will be a shotgun. I won't go too cheap for that one, at least a Mossberg Maverick 88, or maybe a Benelli Nova Tactical. But I digress.

I have another cognitive skills clinic at the range on Monday evening. Those are always fun. I'll try to remember to take a couple of pictures. One of these days I'll bring my Garrison and work with it. I need to practice my holster draw in the basement first. Until then.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Nice write up. If you get that overworked grip thing going, take a break. Just 5-10 min, get a drink. Shake your hands out. When you go back to it, put the target at 6 feet, get to chest ready (also called Compressed High Ready and about a dozen other things), look at the center X, close your eyes, push out and fire. Remember, no finger on the bang button until after you push out.
It helps shut your brain out a few time and let the muscle memory do what it's supposed to. If you see steadily worsening hits, stop. Don't encode bad trying to get back to good. You'll be back soon :)

Cliff, I know you’ll think this sounds crazy but I think you’re recoil sensitive/averse. When you’re blazing away you don’t really have time to overthink what you’re doing. When you slow down you start pulling down and left which I’m convinced is a flinch. We all know you’ve got that death grip and that certainly doesn’t help. And I read all your reports and look at all the pics and your .22 guns all seem to shoot true - because there’s no significant recoil. If what you were doing wasn’t subconscious as opposed to technique I would have expected you to get past this given the amount you shoot. I do it from time to time. I’ll occasionally catch myself flinching when I decide to pull up on a shot or I’ve left the safety on. To me it feels like I came clean out of my shoes. When my sister was in town she shot my Prodigy and I had left the safety on and she flinched and it looked like she’d grabbed an electric fence. And she is a championship level cowboy action shooter.

Just my .02¢.

Best,

Dr. SimonRL

I tend to agree. It's a mental thing I've got to get over. In fact, there's been a few times when I shot my .45, forgot, and left the safety on. I flinched and it surprised me. Now I purposefully leave the safety on and make a few practice pulls of the trigger trying to keep a steady sight picture. I need to relax a little and trust the sight picture. 😉

Thank you. Ya know, it's been a while since I've done any "natural point of aim" exercises. I can do this easily in my dry fire laser range. Maybe next time I go to live fire practice I will start on the short range and do your suggested exercise. (We have to shoot at least 30 feet on the long range at this facility.) I'm sure eventually, if I keep practicing properly, something will click and I'll get over this plateau. I hope. ;)
