Range Report: More 1911 Practice, 4/3/25

BassCliff

Well, hey gang!

Greetings from the Wild Wild Upper Midwest, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. It's been a rare, three-range-days-in-a-row kind of week for me. Mrs. BassCliff is coming back from her Mom's tomorrow so that will put a screeching halt to all the fun I've been having. After going to the veterinarian's office to pick up some medication, giving it to my Wonder Pooch, getting in a quick half-workout, and meeting a friend for lunch, I finally made it out to the newer facility with my dirty 1911s for more practice. I tossed downrange another 100 rounds of .45 and 100 rounds of 9mm from my favorite lane, #2.

AP1GczNwpYNNgSIVe5EpJSyYK-JUD86Yh_2FKteySWTdTngBO_QjQ9AFEYBtv12F_1YvOri8__7oEtVRkdwDV2RckVJ2Ms0DTmx08-Xx6K4h0t7grzx-e2FF0rDovaIM8tCip0UW8oUyVxWOAmzeH9e1qgmdPw=w1648-h927-s-no

I'm sure you're familiar with Gary and Ron by now. As grippy as the grips are on the Garrison, I think I'll try the stock grips just to be sure I need the grippy grips for this sidearm. The stock grips on the Ronin seem to be quite adequate, although I might put some grip tape on the front strap.

AP1GczN-Z8ZMFWyPvDBGSgKWy4HQcssZCGyz5ha5CIvlmObuA7chKirW0Vvs6HtP9gn37AK5Y4x6WbaCUF-ISZsv2OSwI1ZaTKxJUCXL0Twqv748J3bxId5d8ymoEy0DPXZzxVfAMM3gzcq2zRiddecIT0c3QA=w1648-h927-s-no

Again I was using LAX Ammunition's .45ACP 230 grain and Blazer Brass 9mm 124 grain. I had no malfunctions at all today from either unit.

AP1GczNkooPwzApCsbQQcAUvzozAseUbq9CtFN_2iYMo_754baWKmeCjVdIKjlcCu9XU8PCUbpojb0eVXSSKCww-d-5lRSru58-YQtnK9gF3qFvnB7uZqYN4zVGA7lQDHvraWKdDNoRi4t2c5Za1glpjYCik6w=w1648-h927-s-no

I brought a few different targets today and used 10-shot strings for the most part. Most were at distances of 10 yards but I sent a few targets out to 15 yards. I began the session with Gary .45 on the B-8 targets. The first one came back like this.

AP1GczOlcCYGw7CaLLtSe1-L5YE3yADx02wkJldpWPT-Q1CTim83x01cio07g_yPJnYsPaK-snTRHJTNLFJRRiPYiDVC-CcH_MXIKOTUbrp3cZIJGxwgdAsKGY5-kgZz6_GEZuKc0i-5NH2g4dU1hzy6hQJwXQ=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, that's not as low/left as I started yesterday. I should shoot this gun more often. The more I shoot it, the better I like it. Here's target #2.

AP1GczPGnmPg_RLmldPVYkvwdQoKTiH00rcI57S-HUyiwcwt7C31N01vg0GDIASOZsQDX1MGmCHUb6hQXt5nVkZchAYE23FNEFx4oZWnug6LdI4CeM_RoGh4maffq22kmpWZkywNsJHc89V8zS2yAUC595nMLg=w1648-h927-s-no

Now that's a pretty good target, for me, with this pistol. Just one bad flyer low/left. I'm glad I edited the yellow dot into the B-8 centers. It seems to help these old eyes. Here's target #3.

AP1GczN_t3NmDjXjLrPcafPwGV83_ByrBY2SLklCFwayaN3QYvdpPXMAnyNaqIuIaX3FIIktbQqUY765vOmcR3shmAb_Aeo-5-ZIeXGIIUyskBDxUcY6bGJEJ0P9xpYdoUTqTB8mO3Ba4TMxKgMCNdIeEmUANA=w1648-h927-s-no

Oh! Dangerously close to getting them all in the black. Half are in the 10 ring. It's like I know what to do, I know how to do it right, I know when I do it right, but my consistency sucks. Here's target #4.

AP1GczO35Mj1BOdOFqyEhLX-0TrfztA2mbvYP13BI121S8SDSR5pIqh8s4kfZTtdSTO3cO-Ok43lID5eokWZfKVsSkep01-oPx7rNqkRUUaUpKewzmMYNSRzTDWnt7rxXYEme2Tif-fa6CF4Z_mnnEcAsg0hDg=w1648-h927-s-no

Again, a little above average for me. That very high shot happened when I was riding the reset too closely and it got away from me unexpectedly, before I let the sights settle. I'll have to watch that. With the last 10 rounds in this box, here's target #5.

AP1GczOoMSGjDdKPi_TnPdlsrEH6gJW72Q7bNCwIRRlNfapAcZyNpmtWesWar7fxheQ57zFXdJidethT9fSvA_a8j6ezNX8K3QZJVYeNRpHCMQHu6rNwTyzxRCBQxV_LCmXpJHzFbEK1uj6C2IVTdKmMrET4Kg=w1648-h927-s-no

The hit in the 8 ring I can pass off as "combat accuracy" but the 7 ring hits are disappointing. Let's try to have fewer of those. Now we'll move on to the Ronin 9mm, same target, same distance. Here's target #1.

AP1GczM-fVWEnheMMaDdk5P_6pwOPtq2Wh95zzZyq8AsLUHEhxYsr1N1l_YO-qUqsbeQFK7-M-GNEMuIJ15fswK26bmVJiQmUe6InySOogDZq_7o6xGoGZ1BNfff7kclm-781lQkBxsHz8QZFmMmnJ9vXsVK1g=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, not horrible. Again, that high shot in the 8 ring happened when I was riding the reset and didn't let my sights settle. You'd think I would've learned my lesson. Here's Ron's target #2.

AP1GczNH0yG5JBVmsO8IcVYAtMvYJgP5dSL9e5RNHs8pZmlJmN0-h6tNirfg3BV2lHnYvN-2N92m_oyuGuUMaSJIE9JZzp_m8-fk5NQzclGNnkYVchiTLsK5jzNG9qA9oDpdBgJzypQMBgyhRtMIV93A31w2xg=w1648-h927-s-no

That's a pretty tight group with a flyer off by itself in the 9 ring. It seems I was very consistent with my hold on this target. I changed my hold for the next target hoping to move that group more toward center. Let's see how I did with target #3.

AP1GczO-W-inlkFrLvQRx77awmDiY_-8OgpAw38lg7Wzsg-DXqdLMcHGfFhKXILvsHpW45cP-Z5ODsE8mjpqnTUPQ7JYhNYugJEq-VrBrtIMJsf64WnotcwCKfWX7MhvXthiBT88HXijEOTt-WhT-wc6qpPgNg=w1648-h927-s-no

Well, I guess the group is more centered but it really spread out. Maybe I'm trying too hard and need to breathe better. I tend to hold my breath when I'm concentrating. So, let's take a breath before the shot, let it halfway out, pull the trigger, then continue breathing. Here's target #4.

AP1GczPcsHSNH5TQqtS6NyS2MZMvJO0MTd5_wvnrbKhDs66zDvaR_eOrDkBC3ZdbvaMZlrJtCi_TZwLh11sPsyleLy1BgT7-8qqAjGkcaBXxzKvymAJCJhGBrKfpUyXfZ8lSA0iyPknNF6henEcfHfyB5RYGOQ=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, not too bad of a group, still just a little high gain. The next time I take this pistol out I think I'll shoot closer, 5 or 7 yards, just to make sure the rear sight is adjusted properly. Nah, it's not the sights, it's the shooter! :ROFLMAO: Now I'm going to practice a little at 15 yards.

AP1GczMasxc8gQMKpufLDx9NviJuZguVfOQkmmNMKNBH8vymPNbzfYevFB7UxyY8rYELUUfs8ilji7s3p1RGMhET6Ej-5O2mxqrWF8EXhI0TJGTezw4G3AYItuc5zR17-jDGHz78ZHfZqIzQApAQPlfNy_rjcA=w1648-h927-s-no

The Ronin target #5 came back from 15 yards like this.

AP1GczP_y0WWJqfV7iIzJck8pPfrk6EIiZVtoQwDOeT3klLzhh8QQJkbw9SBPzbOcfIGXTruTXCbMFNOCLaiLtLSQ4d_ZAK6b_gwNll7rwuSBkLPhGDkSt-xRkbMcA_5wyTkncyEi7DL4sGdg_ZxUPcKSuqJeg=w1648-h927-s-no

Hmm, again with the high and a little left. I think it just the hold in my sight picture. I'll try to stick to a hard 6 o'clock hold.

I've got a few more pictures to post up in the next reply. Stay tuned.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi,

Let me get the rest of my targets up. I know you've been waiting breathlessly. :ROFLMAO:

I used one of my favorite targets, sent it out to 10 yards, and tried to make one ragged hole with the Garrison. I failed miserably.

AP1GczM_6-iVy2CadxcH7t7MLgsgR7f18X0foVhwMs8YCdtXeuMIJh1W_31CAHrVdXcYFCL9nhC1sJZuRv-6tg7ld27Jay3MPw5RuILyfUyfTZBRvr1znTORsfmbD6ter8LyY-Vtk9NpwSAWKZkqHvGKQqPhTQ=w1648-h927-s-no

Although, the biggest hole is in the bullseye. I'll take a little solace in that. I'm going to patch up this target and shoot a couple more 10-shot strings at it. Here's the next-to-last target for Gary.

AP1GczPWajx5Avhr1sD8I6MKK52CGt2YWrLgbigKzRGG8IyTajg0EYUMckSMop3-3pZYflFyYiMYVc8XqAyl-vso3vYCwhstDDn9-S-MLQVkMiWOGMhyhrejxc3vUCnH3eVZOBjUgvtLD6G1pFQeqSUK8A9Gjg=w1648-h927-s-no

OK, one flyer high and one flyer low. All I can say is, "Drat!". I'll patch it up again and put 10 more hits on it.

AP1GczOvOvT6vwemZpJ6H1V6RfMJNYAFTWlX4p2KAQUjNAX2SWvZGikwGNGsPZBePebLo4mQaXx-8TAK5yg_0uPzDBQH0jN_6Riz_r0uqQxUzQfFHJ4BuvrqT7xxPtYRlLpzQc3jsCz5eGjPu1EVCPOAKgrt1w=w1648-h927-s-no

I shot this string rather quickly, hence the spread. But I won't kick myself. I consider this adequate defensive shooting.

OK, let's get 50 more rounds on a new target through the Ronin. Here's the first one.

AP1GczMjj_NWlJ1A2DeaUAW_2_xTXn6tk7zvZsMuFThv4OuihLtTvzSQ9HbhhBOA8CHb9j3mLKV0A0scm3DSDGK_W-LYIFTLVRilIVqwgS0UauQpzyQl7yRpkTqkzQXmEIwZPtbnfJR1SFSu10B6O4DpUPQ7-w=w1648-h927-s-no

The second one is about the same. Does that mean "consistent"?

AP1GczOjSJ8Od8gt5f9cybNgmbjNFsnBE6W57w_lyU6x9mpj0fJCvKhHhHhGXt5l64InnjzK1SjQFAbZU_K6M2NYFxmBe4supA_HaCz8WJXkON6PIlqt7p6ACUSef9vwor-IQiC4Y94nbwDZJu8eJnKKqWJjEw=w1648-h927-s-no

The third target had a pretty good group in the middle with one high flyer.

AP1GczMQsNoDnGEPnIwNpI9Xsrh7cvKtczmzYAzy_DI2GDusFsEtMdI_ZWCPahqeIEZEQhA-hM3crhijbsT0NAhdODyYwTBNU0purv0AFiAQgHH3P_q9-kohxlAA-Vtu0sBWgZz-vhnwkeTFprWMVpDoAlKxvw=w1648-h927-s-no

Now I'll send a couple of targets out to 15 yards. The results speak for themselves.

AP1GczNT0OrB8vtFJdJIUP9U9b2qASvdRerOKEAGmP-X5Gkptv71lHK-7iOY9SAWQYimVTVAHIIMVoiqGJTHrmZn1pev-75yj6myYAg7objj8EPi9EMhfaxEdrEjHd7lf3Mo98S5m5xskntstRWRZvZzEaZkgg=w1648-h927-s-no

And the last target, at 15 yards, had a few high flyers.

AP1GczPskt0XzDPwd1oyV6o6Ps9I9-PYmBW6q5wWCtO-4t11C3A_TTGU6ZwXtYuODxCZsa8zV1fu1vvmDVlTaHgovDfSjEN7-SDoKhJ6479JXSzpiIyZPyGhPHUL_I19-8CjetDhiHb7Ns-cAoFsZwamhbXycQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I'll make it a point to shoot at least one target per session a a greater range. I need the practice. Now I must sweep my brass, pack my kit, and leave a little something for the next person who uses this lane.

AP1GczN1j5EfbRdPtNe650LttL2ywKKJIoOv25gQ3OuXHEXCm6mWZQzPUScybY_872fux6BmHpLtNk42oCgBhqcoJL96hA5LVZhHBTsUR1omEvCE0lA1Gfj9tOIEecdzMCdhF6iWEcM9J_JewxUw8V4qqPTBxg=w1648-h927-s-no

I didn't use all the B-8 centers I was planning. So the next guy can use my tape squares to cover his hits.

And that's all she wrote. Now I've got a couple of dirty 1911s to clean. How cools is that? ;) I'll see you guys soon, or at least your electrons. Take care.

Cliff, like everyone here I have enjoyed reading your range reports and watching your experiences with different guns and rooting for you as your skills have gotten better and better. Your groups are starting to look pretty nice, but when I look at the vast majority of your targets they look as though there is some sort of force field that prevents your rounds from traversing to the right side of your targets. I’m sure you are aware of this and I don’t want to be overly critical, but in order for you to get your game where I know you want to you need to get this figured out. I don’t think this is a shooter tutor target situation, I think it’s more nuanced than that. If I’m pulling left it is almost always because I’m being lazy with my trigger pull. I have had times when a pistol doesn’t fit my hand well and I tend to twist at my wrist. I was wondering how you would feel getting someone to shoot video of you at one of your range sessions and let us have a collective look at your style - particularly your grip. I’d be more than happy to put my money where my mouth is and watch some video and offer some suggestions.

Please take this post in the vein it is intended - constructive feedback to a fellow student of the gun.

Best,

Simon

Hi,

Can't remember the last time I shot indoors .... The indoor ranges here have oppressive rates, I just go out in the desert

Sorry to hear that. My range is actually two indoor ranges for one reasonable monthly fee. I can go to either. I also get 20% off on classes, free rentals, all-you-can-eat range time (providing there are no reservations). I'd like to shoot outdoors more often but the closest are all 45 min. to an hour away. I make it outside every once in a while. I miss it. I used to train outdoors all the time.

I know what you mean. On a lot of my targets, even when most of the hits are center, they are all on the left side of a vertical line down the middle of the target. It's amazing! ;) Case in point:

1743742104224.png

I thought about taking some video today but didn't. It's easy enough for me to set up my phone and record my shots. I'm not sure how much you can distinguish from a cell phone video but it's worth a shot. (No pun intended.) :p

I don't mean to frustrate anyone with my mediocrity. I'm just sharing my fun. I really appreciate you for wanting to help me "up my game". I almost feel like I'm thaaaaat close to busting up to the next level. Perhaps I should concentrate on those two or three guns I feel I shoot the best and perfect those. I have acquired a few different handguns lately and tend to shoot something different every week, maybe reinforcing bad habits and mental laziness.

It could be something as simple as trigger finger placement. I tend to use the middle of the pad all the time but some of my guns may require more of the finger tip because of the way I shoot/aim/hold/grip/etc. The next time I'm at the range I'll try to get some video for critique purposes. Note that it's going to be a while. I have a "procedure" coming up that will require at least a 4 week recovery period. I'll be taking a break from my range trips. Maybe that will do me good. I can use that time for laser dry fire practice with my Mantis-X. It can't hurt. ;)

Again, thanks for your interest in improving my skills. You're a good man. I hope it helps others too. Bless you.

Move that rear sight to the right just a bit .Great groups move the sight!

Hi,

Cliff has a veritable arsenal. He's gonna need a good sight pusher to "Correct" all that heat.

Only a few of my pistols have an adjustable rear sight. I suppose i could add a good sight pusher to my toolkit. But I think you're right in suspecting my trigger press. Maybe my Mantis-X can help me with that. It may be a few weeks before I make it back to the range. I'll have time for some intensive dry fire training. ;)

Brother I almost guarantee it. Shoot them from a benchrest and/or have someone else shoot it. That will tell the story.

The cure is dryfire practice with a spent casing out on the end of the slide. That and pressing through the take up prior to readying for the shot.
