Hey gang!
That's right! Because of the generous support from our sponsors, and the fact that Mrs. BassCliff is out of town, I'm back with another show this week! Today we'll continue with Failure To Stop drills, using both the XD9 Mod.3 with Holosun and the Echelon 4.5F Comp. Plus we'll sneak in a 10-10-10 drill. Stay tuned to find out which pistol was used for the 10-10-10. I hadn't run a 10-10-10 for a while now. But first, a word from our sponsor.
I shot at the older facility today. Behind that door next to lane #1 is the "short range". When drawing from holster you must use the short range.
The short range consists of 5 lanes, A thru E.
There were a couple of other shooters on B and C but they didn't shoot much since they were finishing up. I was assigned lane D. I'll remove that shelf after I load all my magazines. That'll give me room to draw from holster and not shoot anything I shouldn't.
The maximum distance in here is listed as 17.5 feet. I think if I shoot from the very back side of the booth it might be 18 feet, 6 yards. This is in keeping with the oft-quoted statistic; most self defense encounters involve three to five shots at three to five yards.
I put my silhouette target out to the maximum distance. You might notice that I also gave this "bad guy" a pair of red eyes. I was able to time my FTS drills in between the other shooters. But they left soon after I started and I had the short range to myself.
I started the FTS drills using my XD9.3 with the optic. I started cold, no warm ups. The arrows point at the first try. You can probably guess that I failed to find my dot and let'er rip anyway.
I did 10 FTS drills with the XD9.3 followed by 6 FTS drills using the Echelon. Note that I was shooting the Echelon with iron sights without my special lens shooting glasses. Still, I had a pretty good combination of speed and accuracy. There were no wild head shots today (except for the first string).
You see a few times with the first shot under 2 seconds. Drills #4 and #5, using the Echelon, involved a slide lock reload. My reload was a little slower because I was using a different mag carrier, not the one I usually train with. Takeaway: Train with the gear you intend to EDC. I hadn't used that spare mag carrier in quite a while. If I'm going to carry it, I need to train with it more.
Now it's time to move out to the long range and perhaps concentrate on some marksmanship. I got lane #1, my favorite! I was shooting Blazer Brass 124 grain.
Since the long range wasn't too busy right now I decided to shoot a 10-10-10 drill. That's 10 shots at 10 yards in under 10 seconds from low ready. You get a one second penalty for any hit outside the black, 90 points or better to pass. I shot this with the XD9.3, my first time shooting this drill with this pistol.
I know it's ugly, but that's a passing time/score. Even with the two second penalty, that's 92 points in under 10 seconds. One of these days I'll get them all in the black. Now I'll replace the B-8 center, move it back out to 10 yards and shoot a few more targets with the XD9.3, 50 rounds total.
I hope you don't think I'm cheating too much for putting a yellow dot in the 10 ring on these targets. It really helps my old eyes. I took my time with the next few targets, but I didn't dally much. Continuing with the 10-shot strings...
Drat, one hit out of the black. Here's target #3.
Well, look at that! If you give me the line break they are all in the black. Woot! Here's target #4.
Blast! Just one hit barely out of the black. Foo! Still, I'm feeling pretty confident with this new-ish pistol and its optic. We'll push the last target out to 15 yards, take my time, and see how I do.
Dang! That's a dinky circle. I slowed down, took a breath between each shot. The target came back like this.
What in tarnation!?!? That's not a bad looking target, for me, except for that flyer. I think "flyer" is my middle name. Let's move on to the Echelon. I'm going to try to make a big ragged hole. I've got 50 rounds left so I loaded up both Echelon mags, a 21 and a 17. I put them both on this target at 10 yards.
The very first shot is circled. After that one I tried to settle down a little but still shot fairly quickly with a couple of double-taps thrown in. This really is a flat-shooting pistol. OK, I've got 14 rounds left from this box. I will patch up this target with an 8" reactive circle and really try hard this time. Here we go.
OK! That's a pretty good group. One of my instructors was working the front counter and even he was impressed. I think that calls for a glam shot.
Well, I think we'll end this session on a high note. Now, right across the street from the range is a big store that sells one of my favorite beverages. So, I stopped by and picked me up a 4-pack.
The Black Walnut Imperial Stout checks all the boxes for me. I also picked up a bottle of bubbly for Mrs. BassCliff. She'll be home tomorrow evening and will appreciate that.
And that's all we have for today. I'll probably see you next week with a brand new show. I'd love to see all the holes you guys put in paper too. Fun stuff!
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
