Range Report: New MBUS3 Sights for FPC, 1/15/25

Greetings and Salutations!

I'm back! Two days in a row at the range for me this week. Mrs. BassCliff is visiting her Mom so while the cat's away... ;)

That cheap set if sights I picked up for my new FPC just wasn't cutting it. After a so-so day at the range yesterday I spent more than I wanted to for a set of "real" MagPul MBUS 3 polymer sights there at the range store.

I can really tell the difference between the two. I took Mr. @KillerFord1977's suggestion and installed the front sight on the second slot instead of all the way out to the end. He said this would help with elevation adjustments. He was right.

Then I loaded up 150 rounds of Blazer Brass in my bag and took only the FPC to the range. I was going to take my time and get this thing dialed in.

I started my zero process at 10 yards again, five shots at a time. This was the first result right out of the box.

I'll leave out the intermediate targets where I'm just clicking in between 5 shot strings. It seems now the elevation is pretty good but it still needs POI moved a little more to the left.

AP1GczMSsVgLnQZj4VrKfDqUNreYUdhrE8ZLP5e37zrj54vPu7BLAVa7Y_Wx2i48QgxWRR027e5KKUEyNckTl2XVzWsnjwf7yLQ6DTPaCx6KgQWSQ6Ag3nlaziZXZva0kL3Hj-wLle-YuTIXO4YBsmNbrisRvA=w1648-h927-s-no

I'm finally getting a handle on how to make adjustments. Move the rear sight in the direction you want your POI to move. Move the front sight in the opposite direction. I've patched this target a few times and started using 4" reactive circles for better visibility. This is looking pretty good.

Just to make sure that last target wasn't a fluke, one more click, try it again.

OK, I think the spread in that group was my fault. I'm going to call that good for now and try it at 25 yards. Here's the first target at 25 yards.

OK, a pretty good group, but still leaning right. After a couple more adjustments, I got this better group.

I'm not going to make any more adjustments at this time. I will adjust my hold just a little and put 20 rounds on a fresh target.

Hmm, should I give that rear sight one more click to the left? I think I will, then use a different target. I like this 1/3 size USPSA silhouette that I modified with thick lines on the A boxes. But you can hardly see it at 25 yards. Still, I'll try to put 10 holes in it.

After sending 10 rounds downrange, it came back like this. Whatta ya know? :)

AP1GczMNWGKx9nPHCt7tkLPz3QAbgYeL0DVFy74i_m4sojJfLp-NQ-J1DQe76rgpvS84GjIDCzSsqArIK3PzOWqTzk-0XHbsI11aGKooCN3kjBn1n4kh4vdE9ihJGAvp01stkc9hk4_ThqrFabDXdbPB8jh2uA=w1648-h927-s-no

That's looking pretty nice. I've got 20 rounds left and one reactive silhouette. I'll send it out to 25 yards and put 10 rounds on it, still using a rest like I have been all session.

AP1GczPQFaqWgvtXN7g6WJKwAPvmwwMd_vffuh4dFTQr7Nhdhn05Bf98pVBtYlA6KLfYzR0O4dhcFuXiXp42JvOY02vo7hV34Mdp1MyBfrUsu9EgIsr5KlhHXyW3MwmDu4b5w0hibnuMEUChtrc4JAZAZgr5Gw=w1648-h927-s-no

It came back like this. Not too bad, but I'm starting to rush toward the end of my session.

AP1GczPc2uGXxc72YpAE4flYfHX4_0Hjmaog4nVxG51usOY6yD_QghdLXWC2rpdnskbeoNRuj4eKt6sTTtaXleSCcENjcdCMMk0nsnKNDcZL0SV71-C4uvhPURmzbSjvWRGMV5Jbums0bclyfDwTmTgruwFYVA=w1648-h927-s-no

Now I'm going to live dangerously and try my last 10 shots while freestanding. I patched up this target and sent it back downrange.

Drat, one really bad flyer. I think the sights are well-adjusted. The problem is the shooter and his old eyes. 🤓 But I would say, "Mission accomplished."

After 150 rounds of fun it's time to get some supper! I packed it in. I know some folks can shoot better than that at 25 yards using a pistol. If I keep practicing, who knows? Maybe, eventually, I won't suck so bad. :ROFLMAO: I do plan on getting an optic for it. Maybe I'll use my not-to-expensive TruGlo Ignite on it, then get something a little higher end for the AR. I'll save up some more gig money and then look into options.

This sure is a fun rifle. I'll use it to train in the defensive rifle classes here. It's cheaper to shoot than my AR and it won't concuss the entire range, dang muzzle brake. 🤪 Hey, thanks for coming along with me today. Blessings to all.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
