Range Report: Pretty Good Practice, 2/6/25

BassCliff

Professional
Greetings and Salutations!

I had a plan today and I stuck to it, pretty much. Sometimes I got a little excited and shot a little faster than I wanted, but when I slowed down and concentrated on marksmanship fundamentals I did pretty OK. I'm still getting used to my optic pistol, having to fight with the low-left twitch for some reason. And I ran a cold 10-10-10 drill with my XD45 that was very mediocre. I would've done some damage in a self-defense situation anyway. I put 100 rounds through both the XD9 Mod.3 and VP9 with 50 rounds through the XD45 Mod.2 Tactical. I procured Lane #1 at the closer/older facility. I went there because I got a bit of a late start.

I guess you'd call these my current favs, VP9, XD9 Mod.3, and XD45 Mod.2. Or perhaps I'm just too lazy to clean any other pistols.

AP1GczM_uz1zQa4IrRMlZe1qVg7ivWy-4EMPKEOTCMUX1GjCDDdiQMHmQKBOAiLmUb6lWyJc44lwqXDAgC5KzPqPvI7grsjxMtIM3KvfUf-tUu-5Qutpw1bMc3kRpqoY73WmIeFSoBQcvHzHy8J5gloWAj1D9Q=w1719-h967-s-no

I was using S&B 124 grain in the 9mm units and LAX Ammunition 230 grain in the .45. LAX Ammunition had free shipping yesterday but I didn't have a chance to place an order. Drat. I'll have to wait until next time.

The range wasn't too busy, only a couple of other lanes in use. So I was able to shoot a cold 10-10-10 drill (from low ready) with the XD45. I'd never tried it before with this pistol and it was about time. Here you see the results.

AP1GczMfXnD9YEyYpZwxuMIUhvy0YqN6nLTjkPUTegKosM0DFOs4vALyisIP9zw9U7cVcVcG-Pc98fvT6CoATa-XUFLZVd2Ci0a73x9HyBLNDyjSx04hY-9XZ717lYGJMmZQs6xbW1ahzB1mquoxc1e5QKjnFg=w1719-h967-s-no

Everything is OK except for the lousy accuracy. I'd like to keep them all in the black. Maybe with a little more practice. For the rest of the box, shot in 10-shot strings, I tried to slow down and put 1 or 2 seconds between shots. Here's the next B-8 center.

AP1GczNn3oy_VYx40zEjfB3JYCz2AXH70hmJA_3GeQgKX5rX45YrzCj0d5QFPwqMfWVEDSbH8_PX068LU-bFQCjrtQeAgdgmZoQizBtpESaXvNFchSb1od8rIM2NLnVWb4VEgoelkV88JAh9B4qXBm5GS-O-9A=w1719-h967-s-no

Yeah, one really bad flyer low-left. I think I was riding the reset a little too tightly and let that one get away from me. Otherwise it's not a bad target. Here's the next B-8 center. I think I was using the wrong hold on this one. Yeah, that's it.

AP1GczOi2JUvvCfOR89rU_ZoVXP6ijHh3Nyeg_RRHzshi-pzjpue5G5W0zbaPSEua1K-AlTojovbXaNa6H4CeRShhwpOIIgGIvjt9pP7qX00qHa8iVzxhr183jUTpATmxGPniLx9jsh9T3tszyLTVkNRXYhMPQ=w1719-h967-s-no

I patched up that target it and sent it back out to 10 yards. Again with the one low flyer, even after taking my time and trying to pay attention.

AP1GczMXdbP0JyCwL8OHKKPslrhBCAFahumCYR9BY1swzYsqCLKELOrj4mxyAK4ZNirOiaGUuox44RtyzDCStDRlbUsD_tiBvHfKlcOXdLfWIzKnxBPDGFGXnskz0rajZAo4Y2fNRrYuYcDxBFTtblGG_zxxnQ=w1719-h967-s-no

Still, if you give me the line breaks there's only three outside the 10 ring. For my last string I affixed an 8" reactive circle and sent it out to 15 yards (45 feet). I need to start pushing the distance, right?

AP1GczMYJmKtU2AWVZb6QHvoyChuYP2T862hC2cKDpRJmxfUosSNaCmWbnCLqkjiNkttjxx1Cc4gqmVM1Ijv65W101yzcoJfOKL7nIXUPlrNb6fMpmhkJkKLrbo8sPpsL3mHHgk15K2_WFxZC9656tVbP7Dxnw=w1719-h967-s-no

That's pretty dang small for these old eyes. I tried to put ten hits on it and it came back like this.

AP1GczMcFVlV-jDr0Bk7G31DleaAMIxXGiWjOp365EWcxYG7SeHcULN2JYT7UUMP2f8sP0sMeQwePP9YWvMUQ31CSvZXe-HFwJkjn-MCzuAwlyd1iDO9iFPRUkMnA0wu7yTt57vyc2PlgbNaXn6EC4SRSBbjNw=w1719-h967-s-no

That's not too shabby, except for the usual low-left flyer. Drat. Then I took a page from the range book of @KillerFord1977 and stuck on four 4" reactives around the B-8 center and tried to put 10 hits on each target. Here, using the XD9.3 with the Holosun, I started at the upper left corner and proceeded clockwise.

See? Still three or four low-left hits off of the 4" targets. I'm still getting used to this new optics pistol. Let me patch this target and try to do better on the B-8 center.

AP1GczPcW9dJ0msAifkSlP4e8Kk0FPciROYKOyglzlgYe3lr7uoQT0u1-QaYLajfI2RoTkyyIh1B96tvVNeHknFg0cyRaH0w-tz5ihxyS6XFR4v6lPCMYqNYZCe42Qszd3yMWGZ9cdfaXVJ4e-o6a6tnGRJ13Q=w1719-h967-s-no

Ten hits on the center came back looking like this.

I guess that string is respectable, if you don't count the low-left flyer. But that one is not as bad as others. I patched up the target again and ran the same routine.

AP1GczPr0yTbKdxOHqMh8M4tjMFk97ymOuthqlagRDPUNziof0aGnuOYg5hU6SGLLTIEHoSUTsRVpS1NFep5yssCzYZX3zYN8z-aWr1nyeBo4VSPDMnjeNMaCnKrWimrz06QnnSNHqDV13-G2of46Pl4nCSb3w=w1719-h967-s-no

I could tell my flinch was getting the better of me. For the lower left corner I worked really hard on the fundamentals, and it paid off. I patched up that target one more time and put ten hits on the center B-8. That turned out pretty well.

AP1GczOdT6Yijn4SPClpsqqf_K7Zmui-Tl3tZShJqM7NDRyig6mYnl1Bc12JFYWI81x0sMd83M1W0xPc03OYqhY75B7bUNJvHPJEU6zz_ooMljvdTlHVkZLhI1FcR0Z2C6m2iQ5MN0OnytAhpkpTdO9acnGacA=w1719-h967-s-no

Perhaps I'm starting to get a handle on this optic pistol? To me it seems to be a little different animal. I can keep iron sights aligned through the trigger pull easier than I can keep the reticle on target. I'm sure it'll get better with practice. I'm sure.

Now it's time to run the same drill with the VP9. I seem to be more consistent with the iron sights on this pistol.

AP1GczMqNDDz4tbFhPDhDibdpwQ2nQjcLtBUObiwWd__7lXeVzEhaN38zsrVcG1lxkrawdS8hYAyhOv00Zvwq9tAM0E0ePdzv9HsHz4AV1dVcpSi39d7I64rDmeUVxt6_dbWPLaq-dbdxdufzpUvlVZDQP1Xcw=w1719-h967-s-no

I think there are only one or two hits, out of the 10-shot strings, that did not make the 4" targets. Now I'll concentrate on the B-8 center.

Hey! That's not too bad, only two hits outside the 10 ring. Wooo hooo! Now Mrs. BassCliff is planning to have supper ready soon so I'm going to take a little shortcut. I have 50 rounds left and I'd like to shoot the VP9 at 15 yards. I sent out a reactive silhouette. I'll try to put 50 hits on it.

And that was my session today. I think I got some things starting to iron themselves out. All it need is more practice, and you know how I love to practice.

I wanted to go to the newer facility today but I was a little tight for time. Next week I'll try to get an earlier start. At the newer facility you can draw from holster to work on those types of drills too. I'll let you know.

Darn good shooting Cliff.

Hi,

Perfection until the wife says you missed the bullseye 😜😝

The common denominator of the off rounds by now should be second nature to correct.

if you are happy with the results then run with it. If not, a diff instructor with a higher range of experience may offer insight

Sure, I know what I'm doing wrong and it's probably a matter of fixing the muscle memory, especially the muscle between the ears.

I got a Mantis-X for Christmas. It's probably about time I start practicing with it. It couldn't hurt.

Agree, but like school, sometimes a different teacher offers a better insight. In my opinion, you need to seek a higher instructor than the “local”. Seek better quality and advance beyond “average and mundane”

I'd love to. It will take some planning, perhaps some travel and some $$$. Once in a while we'll get a high power instructor through here. I missed the last one. Only about $300 for a weekend of instruction in a small class.

Right now using the MantisX on my Sig P-365 Fuse. For sure need more dry fire training with this pistol.

Three different guns, 4 in targets, 15 yds. The low shots on the center target are not fliers, they’re where I was having trouble trying to pick off the bottom edge of the target.

I practice a lot and good guns that do most of the work for you make life a lot easier, but technique is king and a new instructor might help get that low, left tendency out of you. It’s all trigger.
