Got to the range with my new Wilson CQB and my semi-new Garrison (200rds by today?). Here goes:
Conditions:
Sunny after last nights squall.
Cold; and no gloves. Breezy.
Waited til early afternoon - didn’t help temps much, only put sun into my eyes (bad trade off :/ ).
Note: Target stand lanes were all taken, so I adapted and taped targets between hanging plates on another lanes. (I rarely get the ‘good’ lanes, and last six months contented myself with clanging metal, from 14+ inch hanging disks to torso-size metal uprights. Lot of fun but doesn’t help analyzing problems. Need to research me some portable/folding paper stands to take along every time).
Ammo: FMJ 230gr only. Ran S&B for the Garrison; Sig Elite Perf. for the Wilson.
Started with Garrison; 5 shots; 40 feet
Left/low and a low flyer
Next, 5 more at 30ft (same target)
Hitting same gen area; note left edge flyer
I shot once more with Garrison; a tighter group from 25ft. But nothing good. Finally rang torso metal stands with one mag from 45ft.
Notable: NO FTFS/FTEs this time! (One or other had happened a couple times all prev range days). I eased off the lube too, since it’s past break-in period (?).
CQB:
Shot like a dream! Only hiccup: slide did not lock open at end of the first mag. Put it down to the mag, not pistol. It’s also entirely possible I had my thumb slightly over the slide lock; CQB with it’s high trigger guard undercut is a bit diff feel from all my other 1911 experiences. And my small hands. Did not happen again though.
New target; 40 then 30 ft. Forgot to get pic of first 5 shots
So this is 10; nothing off the target.
A while later (think I took a break and shot metal torsos ) 30ft.
Note: target did blow around some in the breeze.
There’s other pics, and I hope I’ve gotten these few in the right order.
My problems:
- Getting older and unsteadier. Probably need new glasses - it’s been 2 yrs. Bottom line: can’t seem to get a tight group anymore
- Hitting left & low consistently (I honestly had thought the Garrison sights were off a bit; I see now by using paper targets that it’s definitely me). This finally explains where my shots were going with the smaller hanging/falling plates.
Any advice/ideas about the ‘left’ problem would be appreciated. By the way, my younger days were always rifle/shotgun focused. Owned a pistol since 1988 (BHP; added a glock in the 90s) & always 9milly but only got serious about it in last 4 yrs. First 1911 .45: RIA GI about 3.5 yrs ago.
It was a good day anyway and while I do wish CQBs FO was bigger like Ronins, the green turned out good.
Regardless, CQB was pretty much flawless on arrival and in someone else’s hands I bet it’d be a machine!
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and any 1911 tips you have from what you can see here…
Regards,
robbie
