Rating the XD Mod.2 Triggers

Over the last few months I was able to find 40 S&W ammo pretty regularly. I only owned a couple of 40 S&W handguns, so I decided to add one more if I found a good deal. I found a new S&W SD40VE for about $350 with shipping/taxes/transfer included, but hesitated for awhile due to so many magazine and website reviewers reporting that the trigger was awful. I finally made the purchase and I don’t feel anything wrong with the trigger.

I’ve owned and fired many handguns, but they all had stock triggers. I’m familiar with long, short, heavy, light, and even squishy triggers. If I wasn’t a fan of a trigger, I would just fire a few hundred rounds to see if the trigger broke-in a bit. This was back when a couple hundred rounds of ammo cost less than a new trigger (up until like 10 months ago). The only gun who’s trigger I still disliked after break-in was the Taurus Millennium G2, and that was just because it broke too far back for my long fingers to comfortably fire.

The XD Mod.2 triggers are probably my favorite. I don’t really notice a significant difference between my Mod.2 triggers and My XDM Elite Trigger, even though the Elite trigger is advertised as being better. In all honesty, are the XD Mod.2 triggers “good", or have I just shot too many cheap guns to know what a good trigger is? Are the reviewers who knocked the SDVE triggers just gun snobs, or do I need to develop better taste in triggers?

First, developing " Better taste in triggers" for striker guns is not an advantage. ALL striker triggers suck. I have a couple Shields. One is a PC .40 and the other is a M 2.0 .45. Even though the .45 trigger is touted as better I can't tell much difference. I've shot my buddy's Shield with all the Apex parts in it. The difference wasn't anywhere near enough to make me go and get the Apex kit. I also have the VP9 and the Walther Q5. Both are by ( almost) all accounts the best striker triggers in the world. And yeah, paying close attention they are smoother with less take up and shorter reset. I shoot (and have shot since the very first magazine) better groups from my XD Mod 2 4" .45.

Some people are too picky for their own good. There's a good reason why these strikers don't have triggers as good as your 1911s.

A couple of thoughts. I find the trigger on my VP9 very nice. I put an Apex on a M&P to use in USPSA and it made a great difference. CZ Custom did reasonable work on a Phantom that made the DA/SA really nice. Sig did an Action job and SRT on my P226 that worked out great. Very few if any DA/SA or striker fired handguns are going to have triggers to match a 1911. My CZ TSO Orange will match any 1911 with it's 2lb trigger but not really a carry gun.
