On February 23, a Mexican force numbering in the thousands and led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna began a siege of the fort. Though vastly outnumbered, the Alamo’s 200 defenders–commanded by James Bowie and William Travis and including the famed frontiersman Davy Crockett—held out for 13 days before the Mexican forces finally overpowered them.

Tried to go there. There was a lot of remodeling going on and nowhere to park. It's situated in a sketchy neighborhood too. Gated parking was $20 per vehicle and we had two. I passed on The Alamo.

Downtown, where The Alamo and the River Walk is located is considered pretty safe. While it's been a couple of years since the wife and I have been there, we used to go take weekend trips to The River Walk all the time. It's safe. Other parts of town, not so.
The River Walk is one of my favorite places. Far less sketchy than most places. Very obvious LEO presence keeps it in check, IMHO.

Btw, if you ever fall into a “riverwalk” canal downtown SA, stand up. Its only knee to waist deep 😁🤣

I first visited the Alamo when in USAF Basic 55 years ago and have been back there a number of times since. Once you get past the gift shop you get a powerful sense of history from the site. It is iconic America. I can hear the ominous music from the movie in my head when down there. And there are some good restaurants along the River Walk.
