Reminder of how many good people there are

We hear so much about bad cops, bad black people, bad whoever, and it gets tough to remember that were all just people trying to go about our day. Here's a story about a cop who knew how to de-escalate a situation and make a positive impact. There are people like this everywhere in all walks of life if we look for them.

The vast MAJORITY of police are good.

But, that doesn't get any press. And that's the problem. It's not the cops - it's the press, and the picture they paint.

We don't need "police reform"...we need "media reform".
The vast majority of people everywhere are good. But good people don't make for good television because they don't provoke anger and drama. Media feeds us what sells. It's a shame.

I'm not arguing with you, by the way, I'm agreeing.

Media feeds us what sells

Used to be, that was reserved for movies, and television shows (sitcoms, police dramas, etc). Unfortunately, somewhere along the lines..."journalism" has been replaced by "sensationalism", and where the journalist used to simply be the "reporter" who would relay the FACTS of a story, they have now become the CENTER of the story and are using it to push their own fame, agenda, policies, and viewpoints.

They're supposed to present unbiased facts - objective, un-colored FACTS.
They're supposed to let the CONSUMER decide how they feel about it.

Those days are long gone.

It doesn’t help that when reporters DO report facts that don’t align with the viewer’s worldview, they get accused of “having an agenda”...

I believe every person (reporters) we see on tv delivering the "news" should have a sign around their neck stating if they actually a have a degree in journalism or not. Below that statement should be something to the effect stating that the words they are about to regurgitate are actual facts based on journalistic ethical practices, their personal opinion, or......they're just spewing the rhetoric their bosses have paid them to relay.

I would love there to be some indication of what's factual vs opinion on all the networks and a notice when they're switching from hard news to editorializing and analyzing. I think you're dead on on that one. We'd all be better off if people stopped listening to Don Lemon, Rachael Maddow, and Tucker Carlson as though they were presenting news and not merely voicing their opinions. The commentary shows are fine but WAY too many people take that commentary as fact. I think you're right. I'd love to see raw facts given. It would help close a lot of ideological chasms in our society.

I believe there are still some ethical media outlets that won’t run a story until facts are verified however they are few.

Believe it or not—check out NPR.

On breaking news, they tend to run a disclaimer to the effect of: “This is a rapidly developing story and some information may not be entirely accurate”...and when things change, they tend to say that they had incorrectly reported the story.

They also will give corrrctions/retractions when they get things wrong; when’s the last time you saw another media outlet do that?

Never. That’s how it should be.

They also spent the last 4 years trashing Trump and lean pretty obviously to the left. I used to subscribe to NPR, but during GW’s term I dropped them.
