Road trip and handgun

I plan on taking a road trip from Michigan to the state I will sheepishly admit to being born and raised in, The Peoples’ Republic of California.

I believe that all the states I plan on traveling through have reciprocal CCW agreements with my current home state of Michigan, except for CA.

I have a Michigan CPL and would like to legally bring a handgun with me on the trip. I know I need to be aware of requirements of each state I travel through, but not sure what to do about CA.

As a non-resident of CA, is it legal when I get to the CA border to store an unloaded handgun in the trunk, with ammo in the cab?

I will be flying back from CA to MI. I know I can legally fly with a handgun following TSA requirements in checked baggage. But since the airport I will be flying out of is in CA, not sure how to legally get it to the airport.

I also plan to find out if I can legally mail an unloaded handgun back to myself in MI. If so, I could do that before hitting the CA border.

I know this isn’t a legal forum, but would appreciate any informed opinions on the matter.

Hope you are driving around IL....they only recip with Hawaii, which does not issue permits (unless you know someone).

Specific rules in IL that are odd...but they do not recognize CC from MI. Gotta leave your firearm in the car in a locked box...

Yep, even going out of my way a bit to avoid IL.

Notwithstanding states that have reciprocity with your state, Federal law allows interstste transportation of firearms anywhere in the US if it is unloaded, inaccessible, and kept separate from ammunition.
