I think I am going to get inline for one this time.

I would like to get one, but it sounds like several CMP requirements must be meet to be eligible. I don't know much about this program, but it's a shame they aren't more easier obtainable. I guess one could find them being sold after a CMP purchaser sells it to a FFL or him/her self at a gun show or something.

One must belong to a CMP-affiliated shooting club/org., or the Graand Collectors Association to be able to buy items from the CMP, which includes M1 Garands.

The CMP 1911 sale won't be any different. The first sale was lottery-based so it's likely this one will be too thus there's no guarantee one will get one.

Thanks Talyn. I plead guilty of not reading the entire form linked in the article, but I did come across the below:

"ADDITIONAL CMP 1911 DETAILS:
Potential purchasers will have to provide CMP 1911 with a set of CMP 1911 documents exhibiting: 1) proof of U.S. Citizenship, 2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club, 3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity, 4) a completed 1911 order form, including a new form 2A with notary. All qualifying documents must be included in your order packet. Click here to view the CMP Eligibility Requirements for ordering."

Form instructions continued with FFL doing a FBI background check after you fill out the federal form, etc.

I'm not sure if my outdoor range club is CMP Affiliated, and I'm currently not, nor ever participated in any marksmanship activity that I could get proof of, (and not even sure what that activity would be (I.E. competition shooting, trap/skeet competitions, etc.). So, it appears I wouldn't qualify and would have to get it another way (like when I bought my M1 Garand or 1918 "Black Army" 1911 Colt at a FFL dealer). I do appreciate your explanation though.

No worries,

One can check through this link to see where the nearest CMP-Affiliated club/org is near them.

Just randomly picking a location in east-central PA I came up with this one.

In the requirements above the following meets documentation needs.

1) proof of U.S. Citizenship, - Passport

2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club, - self explanatory

3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity, - Concealed Carry Permit

In lieu of a CMP-affiliated club/org membership there's the Garand Collectors Association.

Membership allows for purchases at the CMP-online store, and at the North Store at Camp Perry, Ohio, and the South Store at Anniston, GA.

Not sure about the 1911 program since it's a handgun but check the requirements for that.
All good stuff to know, thanks for Your explanation and research Talyn. (y)

I belonged for a CMP club for awhile in another state, and even maintained it when I moved out of that state so I could do business with CMP.

I then decided to join the GCA since it allowed me to still do that, and that my local ranges aren't affiliated.

From the linked 1911 Information - Civilian Marksmanship Program document linked below:

"No 1911s will be available in the CMP stores, or on-line. Only mail order sales will be accepted. All 1911 orders must be delivered via USPS, UPS, Fed EX, etc. to the CMP 1911 address listed above. No in-store or at-the-door drop-off orders will be accepted."

Excerpt from:

So, it doesn't look like the 1911's are available at the online or CMP stores, but being a member of the GCA, checks off the requirement of being CMP affiliated. If a Concealed Carry Permit is proof of a Marksmanship Program, I have that checked off as well, so It looks like one would be able to do the Mail Order route for the 1911's with GCA membership. GCA membership looks like a worthy cause just by itself as I'm interested in all things Garand as a proud owner. Again thanks for sharing this.

BTW membership with GCA you get an informative quarterly magazine.

Best to join GCA as soon as you can.

Also, the North Store isn't too far from you just a long drive on I-80 straight across to Camp Perry. I was able to visit it regualrly when living in MN since it was on the way to visit family in PA. That was during the hey day when alot of Greek rifles were brought into the state. Last time I was there the pickings were slimmer, but a visit to the North Store has alot of history to it.

The Anniston store usually has a much better inventory since they're the CMP head quarters but its a bit further of a drive.
