Several have posted on how a squib or other such mishaps happen while shooting.

About a year ago, I had a 7.62x51 Nato issue casing split open on the FN FAL when fired.

Freaked me out with the blast out of the chamber.

Inspected the rifle. No apparent damage.

chambered different ammo maker and firearm kept on hammering that day.

Then, about 6 months ago, had a box of Winchester ammo in .308 where the FN sheared the extracted case in half and chambered another round thru the top half of the old shell casing and misfired.
Cleared that, switched to premium Federal .308 and It hasnt malfunctioned or shown issues since.

Interesting.

Surplus ammo?

I know the FM (Portuguese) surplus 7.62x51 I was shooting through my M1A and also my .308 AR was ejecting soft, and the cases were very sooty, leading me to suspect they were underpowered...sooty means the cases weren’t expanding enough to fill the chamber.

Those rounds you pictured, though look like the opposite...maybe a little too hot, and split the case (that could also be weak/brittle brass, though) or, in the case if the second, the case was still expanded when the bolt tried to extract, ripping it in half (different...usually, it just tears the case head off or rips a gouge out of the rim).

First round that split was surplus. either Portuguese or Austrian, I dont remember which
