Navy Shows off 20mm Phalanx at 4,500 Rounds Per Minute​

The CIWS (pronounced See-Whiz, like Cheese-Whiz but with a lot more Brrrrt) is a 13,600-pound electric-powered self-contained system that includes a 20mm M61A1 Gatling gun – the same type of gun often found in jet fighters like the F-15 and F-16 – along with a search and tracking radar and a 1,550-round standard capacity magazine.

Designed not only to shoot down low-flying aircraft and helicopters, Phalanx can also be used against incoming missiles

Talking to some Navy folks I was with overseas, the early versions had some software problems causing them to go into a do loop of sorts and not firing at all. Consequently, CIWS became "Chr**t It Won't Shoot."
