Self Defense Shooting with Corrective Lenses

Thought I’d share this article because I always keep my readers on my nightstand in case I have to see my front sight.

I have worn contacts for 40 years, and for almost 10 years now I have worked with my eye doctor to provide me the best front-sight focus possible. This is done by wearing a full-power contact in my non-dominant eye, and a lower power contact in my dominant eye. It does take a bit of time to get used to, but for me it is the best solution to allow me to keep my shooting skills intact.

For those times that I might not be wearing my contacts, like in the middle of the night, I also train in "Point Shooting" skills. Most are surprised at just how accurate they can be once they learn the skill of Point Shooting. Could I aim for the middle button of a shirt with this skill? No, but keeping rounds on the center mass of a man-sized target is actually not hard at all.

Although I wear bifocals, my vision is such that I can focus on the front sight without my glasses. When I go to the shooting range I take my glasses off and just use safety glasses. I also put a laser on my nightstand pistol for low light or dark conditions. At the range I will practice using the iron sights, the laser, and then instinct shooting.

One thing about the laser, it will show you how steady/unsteady your aim is.
