Wife called me to take something out of freezer in garage for dinner. When I opened it up everything was defrosting---I mean everything! The only things that got saved was red meat some chicken and the thanksgiving turkey as they were at the bottom of the chest. Pisses me off cause we had just done a shop last saturday. Got the stuff in the house freezer and the neighbors freezer next door. Everything else was soft and defrosted and didn't want to take a chance. Went to local appliance store and $1000 later I have a new upright freezer being delivered thursday. I have no idea when it stopped working but was working saturday when we put stuff in it. Guess it could have been worse! I hate purchasing appliances. The old one was only 4 years old but I hated the chest so this time it's an upright model. Also made sure it was garage ready as that will be its new home.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago.
Make sure the freezer has a “power light” on the outside of the freezer. A little colored diode.
Everytime I walk by, I glance to see if the light is on

Well this thread brought back a memory…..

My parents had a freezer in the basement, didn’t use it much however after my dad passed everyone forgot about it.
When my mother’s health started to fail we hired a home health aide to help her during the day, one day I received a call from the aide who told me there was a strange smell coming from somewhere.
The following weekend we stopped by and as soon as we walked into the house the smell made our eyes water.
It was apparent the smell was coming from the basement and was strong near the freezer, it had been unplugged…..
I flat out refused to open the door and wrapped the freezer in a tarp, one of my cousins helped me drag it up the stairs and outside. The city would take it but We had to remove the door before we put it at the curb. What we found was a 20 pound turkey had been forgotten in the freezer and my mother had unplugged it to save money.
The house smelled for about two months.

Yeah it did but..... I really never look to be honest. Guess I will add that to my daily list of things to do. Freezer was only 3.5 years old when I looked at paperwork last night. The Lowes warranty went out in April--just figures. Lesson learned. I took it out of garage last night and put on the side of house. When the new one comes tomorrow they will haul it off. Just looked at my cameras and 2 people stole it! Well, that solves one problem, hope they enjoy it!

We had a small freezer in the garage at one time and the GFCI outlet tripped. We were out of town at a match for a few days and came home to a freezer full of defrosted stuff. The freezer was fine, but the contents were spoiled. Blowflies were abundant. I couldn't get close to it, but my wife was able to empty it and clean it out. We dumped the contents at a dumpster at a grocery store and gave the freezer away. I nearly cried over the spoiled meat in there. The only good thing was they were not at today's prices. Thank you modern building codes for the loss of hundreds of dollars.

Back in 2003, both my sons were still at home and we went through quite a bit of groceries each month. We had just bought our monthly supply when Hurricane Elvis hit. A full week without power and everything spoiled. More than $600 worth of food lost. 🤬
Shortly after that I bought a portable generator. Now when the power goes out, the first two things I plug in are the refridgorator and freezer.
