SHOTGUN BARREL LENGTH DOESN'T AFFECT PATTERN

One of the big misconceptions about shotguns is in regard to barrel length and pattern density. For years the perception was that barrel length affects shotgun pattern. A myth was that shorter barrel shotguns patterned wider and long barrel shotguns had a tighter pattern. Only recently has that myth been overturned.

Shotgun barrel length doesn’t affect patterning. What affects your pattern is your choke.

I know I heard from every shooter I spoke with since about 1981 that longer barrels pattern more tightly at longer distances. We're never too old to learn...

The reason why traditionally you use a longer barrel for goose hunting or quail hunting than you do for self defense is accuracy, not shot pattern. A longer sight plain is easier to make accurate shots with at long distances.

That's also physics. And maybe algebra, which you all thought you would never use again after high school. ;)
