Shotguns vs. PCCs For Home Defense: Is There A Clear Winner?

The age-old debate about which firearm platform is best for home defense will continue forever. We often hear or read arguments centered on AR-15s vs. shotguns or pistols vs. rifles, but now, with PCCs (pistol caliber carbines) being more popular than ever, it’s time to include them in the contention.

While no doubt shotguns and a PCC are relevant choices the most underrated choice especially for non gun folks , or those that just don’t practice is a Ruger 10/22 or a 22 LR or Mag Lever gun.

I don’t k ow of too many folks hit with a 22 out of a 10/22 that survived IF decent ammo like CCI Stingers or the like is ran.

Well for those interested in a shotgun a class I assisted at here’s the difference in flight control 00 buck. While both would be dead the one hole group is 2 rounds of Federal Flight control 12 ga out of a Benelli M4. Both groups were One at 5 yards one at 10!

I like the Yes to Both answer... although I can run shorties in my KSG, giving me lots of 12Ga action, I have been wanting to get a 10mm PCC really bad and there have been several good options to hit the market lately. Just need a little more money...

Don't really have a definitive selection here..Both good choices and as several have pointed out - both is even better. That being said nothing gets ready to go faster than the sidearm - quick, best moving around tight spaces and use by one hand if needed. If one saw the break-in/house invasion team outside getting ready - sure pop a pistol in the quick holster and get the Sgun or Pcc. I do somewhat disagree with the articles contention that a long road awaits should you need to defend your home from a gang of attackers who broke in. Most municipalities' DA, after a police inspection of the place, details, etc will not choose to prosecute in those circumstances. After receiving many lawyers advisories I add that you stay inside your residence, let them come to you. Self Defense in those situations is vastly easier to prove than chasing the gang down the lane and out of sight. If your state is a castle defense, all the better.

I am very well stocked on the stuff. Mostly the 8 pellet, but an ample amount of the 9 pellet as well. Another one I like a lot is the Force X2, but that is for a different situation than 5-10 yard shots in your home.

If you’re living the lifestyle where an actual gang is going to break into your home, and is going to be interested in continuing when they suddenly discover the range is two-way…

I daresay you’ve made some questionable life choices.

Just sayin’.

Federal FC buck at close range is basically a pre-fragmented slug.
My primary HD shotgun is loaded with the Force X2. I have no kids or other people in other rooms, I have my plan figured out, right down to knowing exactly where my two cats sleep. The FX2 spreads out a bit more than FC 00B, but it magically becomes 18 smaller projectiles when it hits soft tissue. I know this because I have tested a few boxes of it on things like 5 gallon water bottles, watermelons, wood. So in situations where you might want a little more spread it is an excellent choice.

Up here in the hills there are mostly mcmansions and many many expensive houses. There are things worth breaking in and stealing and often a gang will stake out random neighborhoods and break in even when they know the residents are at home, usually in the daytime. Nothing at all to do with life choices. Poor people don't have expensive jewellry, art, fancy cars etc. Fact of life.

Do those gangs normally hang out and have a gunfight or do they get outta Dodge when lead starts flying back at them ?

good q - oddly enough some actually want to hang around and shoot it out, while many flee. A lot of millionaires live within 20 miles here and very few folks without firearms. Sometime they take the art dealers or custom car collectors hostage. If the leos show up - it's party time. The typical autos are performance autos, tricked out lifted trucks, the best of the european stuff, lambos, porsches, ferraris, bmw benz and on and on.

I'm glad I live in the sort of place where a thief would have to be a moron to do a burglary, much less a home invasion.

Have you done a lot of shooting with Shorties? I hear good things, but I have not yet been able to afford to just shoot a ton of them for my own experimentation. For indoor house defense I like the theory, I am saving up enough to buy bulk and do some experiments of my own.
