Should You Hunt with an AK-47?

The article should have mentioned that the 7.62x39 is in the same power range as the .30/30 Win.

This has been a common practice since our country’s inception, and countless military rifles have become hunting rifles. But today we will investigate the subject to see if can we recommend hunting with an AK.

Well... I have some 5-round magazines for the AK, so I COULD hunt with an AK. It wouldn't be my first choice deer rifle, but it could be done, especially if the rifle was glassed. An SKS would actually be my first choice- semi-auto, longer barrel so higher velocity and sighting radius.. scoped, even better. Still, tho I have faith in the 7.62x39's ability to kill, it is range limited- and altho it is accepted wisdom that it 7.62x39 is "equivalent to the .30-30", I don't buy that. Almost all .30-30's have longer barrels (20") and fire heavier bullets- 150-170 grains vs 124 gr in the 7.62x39's 16'' barrel.

If ever my schedule allows , someday have to pursue Bambi with AMD - 65 SBR .

Because I can , and it would make multiple politician heads explode . ( Humorous word play indicating shocked cognitive dissonance. No politicians were harmed in writing or reading this post .)

But seriously. 7.62 X 39 is in the same ballistic category as the iconic .30-30 levergun .

I deer hunted with AR's in various calibers. never 5.56 though. i'd take a 6.5 grendel over a pinko commie round anyday.

I would still choose the AK over the AR. My opinion was tainted by the M-16 I had in 1965.

Gotcha .

Just exploring how much was. 30 Cal vs 22 Cal , or Platform vs Platform.

I point out , but rarely get listened , that the broader Public Fascination with AR started with the introduction of the A2 evolution.

If you feel confidant with a rifle, it's legal, why not. Would not be my choice but I like a different vibe when woods wandering. I like walking around with my Hawken or Kentucky long rifle in my linen and wool and being transported back in time. Or carrying my bow or revolver as more of a challenge.

Not my thing at all. I’ve hunted traditional muzzeloading rifle for the last few decades. I enjoy the “hunt”. If I was out for meat? Good ‘06 bolt gun or my .44 Mag Marlin. All the MSR’s and their ilk leave me cold. I’ve made 73 trips around the sun, shot my share of deer and, as of today, have never fired more than 2 shots ( and that rarely). I’ve lost a grand total of One deer, and that was when bow hunting more than 40 years ago. I am NOT a “super” rifleman, but I do pick my shots and don’t shoot unless I “know” I can put a round in the boiler room. I simply see no need to carry the weight and capacity of an AK/AR/ whatever. My most satisfying hunt was on a cold wet foggy winter morning when I cleanly dropped a 240 lb Buck in heavy woods at 75 yards with my flintlock .50 cal Tennessee Mountain Rifle using a patched .495 round ball. That guys, was a Hunt👍
