Simo Häyhä may not be a familiar name in the United States or many other parts of the world. But in Finland, he is a well-respected hero, and in the Soviet Union, he will forever be remembered as the infamous “White Death.”

As a hunter before the war, Simo Häyhä used the bolt-action Mosin-Nagant M/28-30 rifle, but he also carried a Suomi KP/-31.

I'm half Finish. My mother was born in Finland. Her father, my grandfather, who I never met, fought in the Winter War. He was wounded in an attack against the Russians, shot while climbing over an embankment. My mother remembers her village being shelled by Russian artillery when she was a small child.

I have several books on the Winter & Continuation Wars, and respect the bravery of the Finnish people as they front to resist the Soviets before & during WW2.

It's a shame the West/USA didn't assist Finland more so they didn't have to ally with Germany when WW2 started up.

I would like to visit Finland sometime.
