Slide Lock

Yancx

Alpha
Sometimes on my SA Prodigy the slide does not lock open after the last round was fired. Some people tell me that's a good thing. Why is it important for the slide to lock open after the last round was fired? Why would it be a good thing for the slide to remain closed after the last round was fired?

Why would the slide not remain opened after the last round and how do I fix it?

Thank you

I can't see how it is a good thing unless it's a range gun only or you're confident in counting your rounds under stress. Reloading with a full magazine is easier (IMHO) if the slide is locked open when the inserted magazine goes empty. Insert a fresh loaded magazine and drop the slide with either the slide lock or hand over the slide technique.

Does this occur with all of your magazines? By any chance are you using a lower power ammunition (115gr)? Or do you ride the slide lock? Perhaps have someone else shoot the pistol to see if it's the pistol or the operator.

It could be related to the recoil spring, magazine tube/follower or slide lock. It might be wise to have a competent gunsmith or Springfield check the pistol out.

I been shooting Winchester NATO 124gr rounds. I have 3-26 round mags, 1-17 and 1-20. It seems to happen on all of them at various times. I have small hands (unfortunately) and I shoot left handed, so I doubt that I'm riding the slide lock. Been shooting for 10 years now, so I doubt I'm limp wristing. My 3 other Springfield's all stay open after the last round was fired. I was thinking it might be the recoil spring or the spring in the mag or the follower not catching the slide lock. I will get it checked out. Thanks for your help

If the slide is made/ supposed to lock back and does not, then a problem

only about 500 rounds thru each of the 5 mags I have

i have 1ks through mine , not sure what the life is expected to be.

i read somewhere you should not leave mags loaded as it weakens the spring over time
i am a testament that i have one that has remained fully loaded for 6 years, it works every time, i swap out loads about 2 times a year and when it goes to the range to exercise , then its back to full
but the range pistols stay empty and get pampered a bit more

for me ...playing with new loads and or powders is when i have fail to load or fail to lock back
1911s are heavier than the xds so i tend to favor the heavier loads for the 1911s
