Two things: What ever they do, standardization is a must. Marines & Army, AF & Navy on the same battlefield must be able to feed off the others supply lines if required. Special ops may be one exception for Arms & ammo variations.

And be thankful you were not in the field in the Nam, having to keep your cleaning rod assembled and taped under the newly issued M-16 for quick access due to frequent jamming. In contact with heavy incoming, gooks advancing and a malfunction...........pucker factor and pissed to the max!
