Springfield M1865 Trapdoor rear sight

How was the rear sight attached to the M1865 Allen Conversion? I have read that the sight was soft soldered to the barrel. Was there a key slot in the barrel or was it just soldered to the round top of the barrel? Also. the sight is listed as being a single leaf, the same one as the M1861 rifle however, most I have seen have a key to fit into the slot of the barrel. Can someone shed some light on this for me. Reason asking, I have a M1865 Allen conversion that does not have a rear sight attached and the barrel metal does not show any signs of ever having one mounted. Smooth barrel no key slot.
