Springfield M1A

KDN2

Alpha
I hardly do any night shooting since my gun club closes the ranges just before dark. Would I be better off leaving the factory Flash Suppressor on the rifle or would it be to my advantage to install a Muzzle brake.

The muzzle brake will make your rifle have noticeably less recoil at the cost of a higher perceived decibel to the shooter.

Muzzle brake is great for stuff on the run in lieu of a flash hider. Brake has less recoil. More flash.

Animals = brake… they dont shoot back. No need to hide the flash. On the run

Targets - or SWAT team = Flash hider.
Hide the flash.

Muzzle brake is not friendly to a firing line. Flash hider is when you shoot with friends .

#1 - Keep the flash hider, therefore the original look.

#2 - Are you recoil sensitive? If you are consider going with a .223/5.56.

I would imagine if you are hunting or otherwise shooting for recreation, the break is probably a better option than the flash hider.

That said, if your M1A is a standard or any of the versions with a 22" barrel... Recoil / sound might not be as big of a concern.

Should be fine as is. However, if you plan on using a can you may want to change it (an adaptor) so that you have a standard thread pitch.
I use Primary Weapons Systems PRC series of breaks, but the original is just fine if not using a can.
* you also need an adjustable gas plug.

The recoil and flash mitigation is excellent.

Not to Hi-jack the thread, but i've been seriously on the fence about finally getting a supressor. I've read alot of opinions/experiences people have had with the M1A and it not supressing well.

Can anyone speak to this? I really would love to get a multi-cal suppressor for the M1A and my M400 Tread.
What mounts do you use? how do I deal with the gassing issue etc.

I'd suppress an AR-10-type rather than a M1A/M-14.

The M1A has a fairly light recoil, so I use Smith Enterprise Vortex flash hiders on mine.
I’ll say that my M1A has less felt recoil than the .300 Win Mag action I used as the crack test for the bolt action stocks I was making for Mossberg back in the day but I disagree that it’s fairly light.
I took my M1A to the range this morning to sight in my new Sig Sauer BDX Scope. 6 rounds at 100 yards and I had it dialed in 9 rounds for fun then I took it out to 200 yards for my last 5 rounds.

Not to bad for a half blind old guy. 😎

Keep in mind using a suppressor on a M1A will result in increased back-pressure into the gas system, therefore you'd be wise to change out & install an adjustable gas system to reduce stress onto the op rod.

Plus, in order to use a suppressor means installing some attachment on to the end of the barrel to attach the suppressor to since I don;t think the threads are compatible with standard .308/7.62x51 can threads.

IMO, stick to putting a can on the Tread. It's alot easier.

My .02

That was my initial thought and plan after reading a bunch of articles on it, and still may be the plan. Eventually down the road i'll pick up another .308 and put a suppressor on that one I think.

Another point is, it's alot easier to put a suppressor on to an AR10-type since adjustable gas blocks are easier to adjust quickly back to a non-suppressor setting, than the adjustable gas plug on a M1A which is not click adjustable but trial & error.

So if you want to take the suppressor on and off regularly it's more involved to get the rifle to run properly either way vs an AR-10-type.

I have been shooting the M1A/M14 suppressed since 2006, and I have used nothing but suppressor kit from Smith Enterprise. I chose SEI because they have been building military M14s for suppressor use for years. Gas & debris are blown back at the shooter... I use the M3 Breech shield to deflect the blow back away from my face, and I use an extra volume gas plug that is NOT adjustable. (The gas system on the M1A/M14 is self adjusting).

I enjoy shooting my M14s suppressed.
