Tanker Garands: The Real Story

Thanks so much, Annihilator, for that excellent link.

I've know for many years of the incredible accuracy of the Springfield Armory M1A. As a hunter, accuracy is the dominant criterion for any hunting rifle.

In terms of rifles, I was and remain primarily a big game hunter. I've carried heavy rifles up-and-down high ridges of the Rockies. At one time, big game rifle weight wasn't an issue. Weight of everything has become an issue.

While I was in my prime big game hunting years, I had gone with a non-hunting friend to a gun store. I stumbled upon an M1A Tanker. I had no clue that Springfield Armory made a Tanker. I can vividly remember holding that gun for a long time while envisioning hunting with easily maneuverable rifle that was powerful enough for all North American big game. I believe the store was asking about $900 for it. My friend told me it would be perfect as a big game rifle. The only reason I didn't buy it was because it was heavier than it looked. My 20/20 hindsight regrets not buying it.

The .308 Win is one of our most popular big game cartridges for darn good reason. It works far better than appears reasonable. It's the venerable '06's veritable twin.

Interesting article! It happens that in the last few weeks I visited a friend's gunshop. He showed me a tanker carbine he had on consignment. It was equipped with a scope and a flash hidder similar to a Brithish jungle carbine. He advised he expected it to sell in the $3000 to $4000 range.

Are you sure it wasn’t an M1D sniper rifle? Those had that cone flash hider on them...

While those are neat...in order to command that kind of price, it would need provenance up the Wazoo to be certain it wasn’t a forgery...there’s a lot of those floating around.
