TCM's "Noir Alley"

to be honest, i watch TCM or AMC like maybe once in a blue moon.

otherwise, those movie channels really don't call me all that much.

i think mostly cuz for my package deal, they are "just there", where as, HBO, and Starz, i pay extra so i watch those more

I’ve been a fan of Noir Alley for a few years now, probably since its inception. I like some of the obscure films but will always watch a Bogart, Casablanca, Maltese Falcon never seems to get old. I started paying more attention to the talent of the directors now.

Films like The Killers, Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, these I can watch over and over and then noticing some nuance in set direction I didn’t catch before. Street scenes of the on-location filming…it’s amazing to see what old LA, SF, NYC looked like in these films.

There was an article that TMC had taken a dip in the PC pool a couple years ago and is editing particulars in films. So far there hasn’t been an insensitivity flag thrown for when Sam Spade’s secretary hands him the calling card of prospective client Joel Cairo. Spade takes a whiff. “Gardenia.” says Effie. Spade replies; “Quick darling, in with him.”

Noticing the regular pay-tv movie channels Showtime, AMC, etc. are playing some real bowsers lately, always liked to catch a good academy award film here and there but there might be some shenanigans going on, maybe it’s strike-related that the movie selection playlists are so blah.

I stored up some N-A and other B&W movies on the dvr to watch for the summer hiatus but just this past week the AT&T receiver/dvr went kaput and had to be replaced so I just lost around 10-15 or so NoirAlley recordings along with others from weeks past.

Firstly, I know the pain of losing a well-stocked DVR. Sorry to hear of yours. I agree with all the films listed. Kudos on the Cairo catch! Some films I've enjoyed through the run: Key Largo (saw it yesterday), Touch of Evil, The Killing, In A Lonely Place, Naked City, on and on. Without doubt, my personal favorite is Out of the Past. Like Bogart, Mitchum is another "Mr. Noir." Cheers!

I failed to give huge props to Eddie Muller and his film preservation efforts with The Film Noir Foundation. In case others aren't aware, several films presented through the years would have been lost to degradation if not for his important work.
