The Aging Defender

"Criminals aren’t looking for a fair fight—most are cowards who prey on those they perceive to be easy targets, and, unfortunately, that often includes the elderly. According to the 2014 National Crime Victimization Survey, between the years of 2003 and 2013, persons 65 years and older were the victims of property crime an average of 1,796,740 times per year in our country, and they were the victims of violent crime 136,720 times annually. Making things even worse, studies indicate that elder victimization often goes unreported, and is therefore highly underestimated in crime statistics—meaning that the problem is likely even more prevalent than it appears. I will be 60 this year, I will continue to train and work out until I no longer can. Hopefully, at 65 I will be able to give those that do evil a run for their money...Jack Wilson can still Take care of business at 72 .
The biggest population of old folks will be us Boomers .And the most victimized by criminal violent thugs .My advice is to get a firearm carry 24/7 get some basic training in the use of firearms and marksmanship and practice often. And never vote for more firearms laws and never support the party who votes to take the 2nd Amendment away.

Having been around this old dirt ball for something over 7 decades, I can speak with some amount of knowledge on this topic. I have some elderly friends who will tell me in an instant that some years ago when they were younger they wouldn't hesitate to use force, including deadly force, in any instant where they or their family might be victimized. I truly believe most of them. But now as some of them have aged (right along with me) that they may not be quite as quick to make that decision.

Somehow with age they feel wisdom or luck, or something else (?), has come right along with the age. I'll even mention maybe some loss of confidence, although I won't go so far as to suggest a loss of courage. But it's sometimes to the point that they might take a second thought about it, maybe thinking they can avoid it by communicating/reasoning, or in the worst case just shoot to wound rather than terminally. I'm truly at a loss as to what to say to them except to reconsider, but at the ages I'm talking about most have reconsidered ...... several times. And to be totally honest, some (just a few) are actually older than I, so I'm asking myself if I might reconsider at some future point in my life as well.

Now I won't judge any of them for their decisions, but I do worry for and about them. I'm convinced the bad guys recognize this tendency in some older folks and take advantage of it. Whether or not this would have a direct impact on the numbers mentioned by the OP remains to be seen.

Y'all ponder on that some, and stay safe!

I agree Joe but My Wisdom tells me I am too old to fight and they are too young to die and it's me or them and self-preservation sets the stag automatically.

Whether we want to admit it or not, all of us become less capable of defending ourselves as we age. Similar to a 5'-2" petite woman, we need something to equalize things.

It's really more than just a little less able to fight and/or too old to run ..... it's more like they've reconsidered the need, or their will to kill, even to defend themselves. The folks I'm referring to, and there's not a lot of them, but they seem to have softened in their resolve to end up on the right side. Maybe it's that they've softened their resolve to hurt or harm another person. They seem somehow to have become 'soft hearted' more so than 'soft headed'.

I don't know for sure, maybe it's just me and my belief that I'll always have the resolve to fight with everything I have available, and to ensure the best result/outcome for me and mine. If one of us, me or the bad guy, has to pay the ultimate price, well then we'll just have to pay it. But I hope upon hope to never weaken my will to the point that I would trust in communication/reasoning with the bad guys.

Hopefully that day of decision will never come. But I'd like to think I'll always be ready, willing, and able to do whatever is necessary to protect myself and mine at whatever the cost.
