The AR-15: Best Home Defense Gun

I like these articles, but there is one aspect of using an AR15 for home defense that I never see addressed by the authors. The main reason that I choose a pistol over any type of rifle or shotgun for home defense is the fact that I have considerably more training and experience with handguns. I would estimate that I have put 10-20 times as many rounds through pistols as I have rifles or shotguns. I also have an inherent comfort level with handguns because I carry one everyday. What I would like to know is how much training, or how many rounds, do the authors think it takes to be able to effectively use an AR-15 in a home defense situation? I know that this number would be different for different shooters, but I would like to see one of the authors of these types of articles offer a ballpark figure.

Some folks can master a long gun quicker than a pistol. My son is an example. Has to put 10x the round count in on a pistol vs a rifle for the amount of accuracy skill.

I think these articles or any objective opinion on the subject has to assume all things being equal. All home defense/ self defense systems only reach their full potential with training and practice. It’s also pretty unlikely that too many people are going to have a harder time getting on top of an AR than they are a pistol. ARs are much easier to shoot accurately.

Although you make great points you kind of answered your own question when you stated that—“the round count would be different for different shooters”
Everyone is different in there abilities and what they feel comfortable with so it wouldn’t be right to put numbers out there which could be seen as saying there is a minimum.
