Under the right (wrong?) conditions, it really wouldn’t take long for that kind of mildew to happen.

Unfortunate.
Probably happened back east in the high humidity zone.

One would think a Vet's org would have at least cleaned them up a bit if there was some sort of a weather event that got them all wet.

I had to be extra careful with my stuff when I was stationed in MN due to the humidity. Used these and the Brownells equivalents.


I even take those precautions here even though we're a lot drier.

I have goldenrods in my safes, and then desiccant as well.
 
That last big batch of M1s the CMP got from overseas (Philippines was it?) Had many full crates of rifles like that. They had been stored in a warehouse with a leaky roof and nobody ever checked them. :eek:
Those that couldn't be fixed were salvaged for parts. Lemme tell ya, if CMP can't fix it, its totally FUBAR. :poop:
