Well, that's what happens when folks vote willy-nilly, casting for the "person" as opposed to the platform. Difficult to justify.
For myself, I have near zero respect for DJT as a person, as a man. Nothing redeeming there IMO.
As a lifelong Republican, you can bet your bottom dollar I voted for DJT (again), and I proudly admit it. I'm all in. . .

Just like most on this forum, I'm a gun nut and have an extensive collection of guns. I'm also very old and I've seen gun laws come, and gun laws go, based on the whim of the politicians in power. Right now, we can buy weapons that years ago were banned.

If Greenlanders were armed to the teeth the way we are in this country, it would give pause to any country about invasion or even the threat of invasion.

The population of Greenland is about half of the population of the county I live in. It doesn’t matter how many guns they have, they could be conquered by Rhode Island.

if it were up to my legislators, and it looks like it will be, we will have a full on semi-automatic gun/rifle ban by years end..

i don't think the Italian neighborhoods have enough spaghetti and meatballs to use as weapons....
 
i had to look up Greenland.......damned, that country is HUGE...

with Russia basically being on both sides.

seems to me, a "few" US Military bases could indeed not only protect Greenland, but thwart a Russian advancement..???

i watched the entire speech last night too, not once did Trump say he was going to take it over...my "take on it", is that maybe he wants military installations (bases) there...

my grand dad always used to say, and i believe this is more truer every day since i heard him say...

"you got to watch out for China and La Rusha (Russia), those bastards will never play fair"

i had to paraphrase what he said from Italian to English......

and grand dad told me that, like way back in the 1950's........

anyone see any significant changes in those 2 communist countries since then....to feel safe.....???

We already have access to and have military bases in Greenland. The US does more for Iceland and Greenland in terms of Air Patrols and assistance that we defend those 2 countries more than even Denmark does for their own territory.
Trump is just being over the top as usual to negotiate down to what he wants. Go in at 195% and negotiate down to 100%

Far as greenland goes, i believe he wants it to kinda be able to strike countries that attack us from afar, now they may tell him to take a hike. and i probably would too if that's all he wanted the country for. don't believe he will send troops there. he has enough on his plate to do that now.

For me, it's because I weigh a lot of different factors and policy positions. I'm not single issue.

We can have a difference of opinion, but this one is straight out of fantasy land. Who was it that crashed a car into protesters in Charlottesville, killing one? Right wing. Who smashed windows and doors and mobbed police officers on January 6? Right wing. Who gets the votes of the Klan? Right wing. Who picked fights in restaurants over mask mandates? Right wing. Who did Timothy McVeigh follow? Right wing. Who kick started the Minneapolis George Floyd riots? White supremacists, who generally go right wing (that one is from the Minneapolis Police Department, in case you think this is some liberal fantasy)

If you want to point to leftists that go ahead and punch people wearing swaztika armbands in Seattle, go right ahead. You want to point to property damage during riots, go ahead. Don't go claiming it's all sunshine and rainbows on your side of the fence. There is definitely a violent streak in the right wing, even if it isn't most of you. There are topics where I'll debate, but they have to be grounded in reality at least a little. Claiming it's the left, not the right, that's violent doesn't fall anywhere near reality.

I’ve spent some time training with the NORBAT. It was a task force consisting of Military service members from the Nordic region. Dam fine troops who train hard and are well equipped.
I don’t believe there will be a “Hostile Takeover” of Greenland conducted by the US Military. That would be a huge mistake.
 
All that's needed for improved US involvement in Greenland with Denmark is a modified COFA (Compact of Free Association) like what we have with the three independent nations of the Central Pacific.

The "modified" is that Greenland has nominal independence (which it already seems to have with Denmark) but delegates authority to the US for more defense than what Denmark can provide to the USA (still in a partnership with Denmark) until Greenland decides to fully become independent and then the USA fully takes over all defensive authority. But, no US "citizenship" benefits to Greenland citizens, like those of Micronesia gets now.

That will address the defense/military concerns and economic/mineral development needs.

Maybe not but I like it. I am heartly sick and tired of double speak mealy mouthed politicians. Shoot from the hip and say what's on your mind, not filtered through a mound of cow pies. Everyone is all hot and bothered of take over Greenland, Gulf of America, Canada as the 51st state, but it was a-okay for our last president to talk about his grandfather being a sports star to a collage that he never attended, his son dying in three different places of three different causes, and his uncle being eaten by cannibals.
