I have a buddy that was a radio operator around 66' to 67' and he has some stories of taking fire from the VC armed with the M1.

I encountered White Mice and South Vietnamese Air Force police carrying Garands, which seemed outsized for them. The M1 carbines seemed more popular with them. I also saw Thai Border Police with various WWII weapons but the M1 carbine was popular with them as well.

During my first 6 months in Vietnam I was a door gunner. We carried numerous ARVN's to and from lz's. I was surprised to see many of them carrying M1's and even BAR's. These folks are generally small in stature and the weapons were taller than they were. I never saw the guns being fired by them but I think recoil management was a serious problem.
