I know people out there that will not drive their personal vehicle up and down that road for that very reason. They rent a vehicle to take the trip.
They make you put your car in its lowest gear to go back down the mountain. They dont want you using brakes that much. Midway down is a check station where they take the temp of your brakes. If they’re to hot, Rangers make you pull off in a lot and wait 15 min for them to cool down

Me and the Ex did Pikes Peak on my Kawasaki Vulcan, back when it was all gravel. There were a ton of bikers that day and we kept passing all these burly biker dudes who dumped their hogs, mostly on the turns. “Hey man need any help?” No. And on we went.
Went back down way faster than we should’ve because of a sudden fierce ice storm barreling down on us. Used engine breaking the whole way because we listened to the warnings. Probably a dozen bikes at the check station with blown tires or warped rotors.
Pic is from 1999, when I weighed 1/2 what I do now 🤣. 4 the Colorado trip we had a full 80 pounds of gear in saddle bags and backstrap bag.

When my twins were at USAFA the one that ran on the marathon team fell in love with the Ascent where you run up the east face. Twice while a Cadet and twice after becoming a pilot. While at Columbus AFB he broke a 32 year old Mississippi state record for the ascent. And yes OkiePewPew the weather does change faster than in Oklahoma because one year my son was unable to finish the race because of a sudden storm at the summit and they stopped the race.

We were snowed on twice at the summit last June when it was 68 degrees at the base
