The Revolver Lock Nobody Asked For – Backlash and Beyond

As far as the lock goes, not a concern of mine. Have ran thousands of rounds thru them with them no issues. Known dozens of men with them who probably ran hundreds of thousands no issues. Have known not one person i would consider credible to have had an issue.

But even if it does happen on the rare unicorn occasion, so do firing pin breakages, spring breaks and any other number of possible mechanical breaks.

Out of all the handguns I have owned or shot, this one, as it currently is, would be the one I would own to protect my family if I could own only one. Cannot offer up a better recommendation personally.

Yeah the lock deal wasn’t a big deal to me either but man people lost their minds iver them.

About the same as folks complaining about the MIM parts.
Have had ild and new and can’t tell a difference other than a new one breaks inthe trigger through use earlier. Never wore any out.

Funny how MIMs are bad on a handgun but the same folks fly everywhere on an aircraft that stays in the air with MIM parts in it.

People just like to bitch

The video makes many valid points about why S&W collectors hate the lock. I go along with all of them as I hate it myself. However, he missed a big one. Right about the time the lock was introduced, S&W's quality began to slip and its only gotten worse as time goes on. For many, myself included, the lock is a sign post of this decline.
So many people are all excited about the new no lock guns. But bear in mind that they do still have MIM parts, two piece barrels and all the other changes S&W has made in the last 20 years.
In short, they don't make 'em like they used to. Many of us bemoan that fact.
I've been collecting S&W revolvers for about 40 years now. I have a bunch of 'em. Not one of them has the lock. Only one has any MIM parts. That's the way I intend to keep it.

I don’t mind the lock itself too much aside from it changing the contour on K-frames enough to make them look a little funny to me.

The thing I don’t like is each one reminds me of the Clinton era. That brings a little bile up.

Given the choice, I’d rather not have it. Most of the S&W models I have or want existed before the lock, so that’s what I usually get.
Come to think of it, I think I only have two lock guns, and neither model was made without a lock: a 69 and a 431PD.

As mentioned the MIM parts are a non issue these days. You will not wear them out. 30 some years ago sure however they are better and if you want a shooter a new S&W is what you want.

Not just me saying it but when the likes of Jerry Miculek, Brian Eastridge and Hilton Ham say they are fine and as their revolvers are as strong as they have ever been hard to argue.

And as Eastridge stated if MIM parts were a problem you shouldn’t be comfortable driving your car or flying in an airliner they seem to keep them on the road and in the air

I might point out that Jerry Miculek and other competitive shooters have their guns custom built by S&W. Only the very best parts that are precision fitted by their best gunsmiths go into their guns.
Average Joe has to settle for whatever the factory turns out. Which is less than optimum these days.

Respectfully if you don’t like MIM parts as made today cool but to state they just don’t work is antiquated theory. While we all have great older S&W’s that are shooters try getting some repaired.

I just sent back a 686-2 and they didn’t make a lot of parts for them the smith there was able to machine something so you can shoot the old non MIMs apart.

We had non MIM model 15’s I. The USAF and shot them quite moderately and they had to constantly be up kept with armorer stuff.

And sure S&W is going ti take care of their team Miculik isn’t going ti say something that isn’t fact. Not to mention folks like Eastridge who have no skin I. The game other than he is an accomplished revolver smith and an RRA Distinguished PPC champion so he knows what he is talking about .

I do most of my shooting in newer MIm S&W revolvers and they run and run. Parts are almost drop in like a Glock and dry fire it and it works into a nice trigger that older stuff didn’t do as well.

Again just respectfully relaying my experience and I have a personal friendship with Eastridge Bolke from American Fighting Revokver and have been around Miculek you won’t find more knowledge telling it how it is folks around. No matter who they shoot for

I never said they were no good. I just don't care for them. I just don't care for the way S&W builds revolvers these days. I'm old and set in my ways. Besides, I got plenty of the good, old ones to shoot and enjoy. 😁

I don’t like the 2-piece barrel system they have now, my model 66, newer version had it, sold it, just not the same, I know the Dan Wesson revolvers had a similar system, but you could change the barrel length without buying another gun, and plus they were tack drivers, if I am not mistaken I think the newer Ruger Super Redhawk may also now have a 2-piece barrel…..
