The Rimfire Report: What is the Best Defensive 22LR Ammo?

Lucky Gunner did an in-depth test of 22 lr ammo in February. They found that the CCI Velocitor and Winchester 37 gr Varmint loads performed the best. Surprisingly, the CCI Stinger didn’t perform as well expected. Of course, these were just gel tests.

It depends on if we are talking out of a rifle, or a pistol...and then, barrel length is also important.

Out of a rifle...Velocitor, MiniMag HP or Solid, Aguila Interceptor, SuperExtra Solid or SuperMaximum HP...maybe Stingers, if your rifle will run them.

Pistols, however...I’ll only run solids, particularly out of a short barrel. My preferred load is Aguila Interceptor; MiniMag or SuperExtra plated solids are also good choices. HP loads like Velocitor are just too iffy as far as expansion...usually, it won’t out of a pistol (particularly short barrels), and if it would, I’d be concerned about lack of penetration.

My most common BUG is a S&W 43C loaded with 8 Interceptors.
