Good story, and thanks for posting. Was able to "visit" Melville a few times back in '72-'73 time frame. I was stationed aboard my first ship, a fleet oiler, at Newport, and we (the ship) would go to Melville to take on fuel and top-off all the tanks. Wasn't until many, many yrs afterwards that I learned that Melville had been used as the PT boat training center. Got to walk on historic (imo) real estate, and wasn't even aware of it at that time. Heck, at 19 yrs old, I was more concerned about getting off the ship and having one (or a few) of the local Narragansett beers.
