this crap is getting real tiring

Old_Me

SAINT
so i get a letter in today's mail.

it was from a company informing me of yet another "data breech", this time with Beretta.com

oh great....

yes, i did buy "some parts" for my 1st 92 FS, this past summer, i think it was.

the list Beretta as one of thier customers, among many others.

but here is what makes me furious......in thier home page:

soooooo........they provide SECURE hosting...???????

yah...riiiiight.

No surprise Beretta and other manufacturers are under constant hack attempts, and even Google isn’t immune. They tell you of a breech and offer consolation by offering “credit monitoring” but do nothing if these phishing scams somehow take over PC’s and devices.

Did you ever get the suspicion that your computer has malware on it?
Maybe your IPS server is corrupt too?

I’m getting bogus emails from my provider AT&T lately, so far three attempts trying to get me to open links to either speed up my WiFi or diagnose slow WiFi connections. Yahoo Mail is suspected to be the weak link.
My PC and devices are old, not updatable for the latest in firewalls so when it comes time to replace these, I will not transfer files or data via sync. Contacts and bookmarked will be entered manually.

Earlier this year I was twice hit with fraudulent credit card charges that I can only trace to one online retailer. They deny their server is hackable or Site is a phishing malware attack

i have a pretty darned good anti-virus/malware program, that is constantly monitoring my pc.

i had this same issue happen with Ruger as well, just after i had purchased wooden stocks for my Vaquero

in the end, will we have to go back to snail mailing checks or money orders, wait about 2 weeks to get there (thanks USPS for that BS too) then wait like 4 to 10 weeks for a delivery..????

for the life of me, the above mentioned company "provides" service to thier customers, yet they still get hacked..????

unbelievable amount of BS, we have to deal with.

i have gone thru now at least 4 new credit card replacements, as i get a text or email from the credit card company, asking me if i made a particular purchase.

this last time about 2 weeks ago, i get a text...i do not recognize the text number and of course, it was on a sunday.

so on monday, i go to the bank, gal there said, "yeah, that's not our text number, good thing you did not respond"

this crap will never stop.

i don't have any answers, other than "go back to the old days, and snail mail everything, and wait till you're in the coffin for your packages".

When I shop online I typically opt out of saving credit card information to whatever site I'm buying from. This can help in case of a hack. The only thing they can get is just your already available public info such as name and address.
Besides not saving credit card information on a purchaser's site, I also only use a credit card that has a low credit limit instead of my bank card when making purchases.

If a cards not saved I wouldn't worry too much about shipping info being stolen.

You could always get a subscription to a personal information monitoring service like Life Lock if you're uncomfortable or uncertain of there unscrupulous activities being done by a scammer in your name.

I keep my credit frozen with the 3 major credit reporting agencies so nobody can open a card or get a loan in my name without a lengthy number key that is mailed to you from the reporting agencies when you ask them to put a freeze on your credit. This doesn't affect your credit score in any negative way and the open credit you already have is still available to use.

If you see a suspicious/unfamiliar email put your cursor on the title & the address should pop up. If it doesn't correspond to a known address then report it as spam.

However, some DB's known about this & if the pop doesn't happen then do the same.

I got tagged on this one. Had to replace my card when I got about $600 worth of crap charged to it.
Just got the letter a couple days ago.

Coincidentally I just 'activated' my new card today. I made a donation to an animal rescue organization last Saturday night pretty late, then Tuesday morning about 9:am got a call from the fraud dept repping my card asking if I had charged an airline ticket and had a charge to Spectrum in the past two days, these being the only activities on my card after the donation. 'Course that doesn't mean the donation or that org had anything to do with it .... but somewhere, someone at sometime did! Got a really good idea where it happened, but don't know enough about 'puters to be sure.

Well NO says I, what do I do now? "We're closing your card immediately. Promised to mail me out a new one that day and I got it today about 3:pm. Phone call to activate it and bought a good steak dinner with a side of Jack Daniels Old#7 tonight with it just to be sure it was working. I can verify the card and the Jack are both working perfectly.

All these places that tell us how safe and secure their systems are, are so full of it it's not even funny. Even my Dr's want me to set up Privia accounts, etc. Heck I don't even like the Dr's keeping my health records on computers. Well BS on that, I've heard tell that several big banks and even the Pentagon at one point was hacked. If they can be had, anyone can be had.

Reading some of the above, I'll be closing out any accounts where I had left the info saved at the vendor. Only 2 or 3, but I'll have them gone by tomorrow night. I maintain a very good virus and I-net browsing protection and keep it up to date and have had no problems for many years. But this one really pizzed me off. It's really hard for us old fogies to stay protected as we should, but we have to try.

Hmm. I've bought a S-ton of stuff from Beretta.com. I didn't get an email.
according to the letter i got, the problems were occuring during July 13, 2022, and December 5, 2022....

and i had with-in that time, in September of 2022, i made 1 purchase...enough to "ding me" for a possible problem. then of course, not knowing of this issue, i had made another purchase from Beretta's website, but that was rather recently in 2023.

not only is it costing the banks/credit card companies monies from fraudulent purchases, but it is costing them money to order up blank cards, assign account numbers to them, and mail them out.

what's equally "not so funny", is that in some way..??

we end up paying for some of this.

what's another issue is that, how many online retailers, local retailers, etc, are having a hacking issue, and NOT catching it..?????

I got 2 new cards in February from $2500 missing. I had those 2 deactivated (don't think the bank liked that very much) and 2 new cards. Fortunately, they print them inhouse. Trying to get thru bank codes to get it all figured out, but I did find where 1k went. Still another 1.5k to go.
