This is a very cool lock

Very cool. I think I saw something similar on the “Antique Roadshow”, one time. The expert on it, demonstrated how it worked to the owner. It was very interesting and ingenious on its design and operation. Good post Chance.
 
Not bad for the time it would seem? If you had enough time you could keep locking and unlocking until it was at the number where you first unlocked it? When the person came back they would totally be unaware until it was opened for inspection.
