Time for fall chores.

Sld1959

Ronin
Heading out to mow and cut down all the flower beds.

Got plans to dig up and split lilly bulbs and make the flower beds longer and less crowded.

This week got to get up the storms in the carport and Halloween decorations too, making it into a little maze for the kids. Lots to do this month like always.

Have a good day.

i been "winterizing" (or fall choring) my house for the past 3 - 4 weeks now.

every time i need to do something, it rains. then i need at least 2 days for the yard to dry out, but then it rains again.

inside, pretty much all is done.

we do not put up outdoor lights, or decorations however.

i can't wait to sell and get into a condo, or a trailer park, or a casket......that way....i don't have to do nuffin no more.

If it can't be maintained with a bush hog, it doesn't belong in my yard!

My fall chores this morning involved mowing the road into where I’ll be pheasant hunting in a few weeks.

From the number of birds I scared up…it’s gonna be a good year.

Time for some relaxation juice (Fulton Moon Howler).

Bust some clays tomorrow…

I have 4 very large trees in my yard. Two Sycamores and two Red Oaks. That makes for a whole lot of very big leaves and a whole lot of work. But I generally let 'em lay until spring just to make sure the trees are completely bare and pass up the worst of winter. I let 'em protect the ground during winter just as Mama Nature intended. But come about March, I'll be working hard for several days. I don't look forward to it.

Speaking of leaves, last year my 30 odd year old Craftsman corded leaf blower finally bit the dust. I went down to the local Home Depot and bought one of those battery powered ones. That damned thing wouldn't blow your hat off your head! 🤬 I managed to get through the season with it, but it about doubled the work. I gave it to my younger son who only needs to blow grass clippings.
Last week I went down to my local Stihl dealer and bought the biggest hand held, gas powered unit they had. OH Yeah! This one will work! ;)

my neighbor has trees, i don't....and i get a good portion of hers in my yard........so i get my old plug-in electric leaf blower, and send them over or under my fence, back into her yard.

i mean after all, isn't it "neighborly to return your neighbors belongings"..???

I have 10 oaks on a pretty small parcel and they all drop at different times. The Poast Oaks usually drop by November and the Red Oaks typically finish about 3 days before Christmas. I know this because my leaf guy always gets a big chunk of my Christmas money! He earns it though. And then about a month after I’ve enjoyed how tidy it is the Live Oaks contribute to the yard work. And then within no time the Post Oaks start popping out leaves and filling my yard with all the cattails and concentrated pollen which I sweep up by the bucket load. Every year I thank God for not making me allergic to that stuff like so many others are here. I love our “cottage in the woods” which is a pretty rare sight for DFW, but it’s a year round job picking up after those beauties.

Still too warm here Zone 5 so still plenty of life left in the garden plantings. Good time of year to do a caulking and weatherstrip look around. Got stung by a yellow jacket only once so far. I average two a year September to first frost, skeeters seem gone - yellow jackets abound.
Stink bugs, boxelders, spiders and carpenter ants addressed inside and out.

Fall fertilizer down, crabgrass already dropped seed for next years takeover but not as bad as last years spring due to diligent spray applications. Probably need to divide the hostas since the rabbits and deer haven’t visited to do the nibbling cutback this year. Will do some tree limb removals and transplant a few perennials soon.

Noticed an uptick in mice, mostly free range gray house variety and an occasional deer mouse. Set up more snap traps. My fault to feed birds. Managed to keep the chipmunk population way down with snap traps since the red tails didn’t return to nest this past spring.

Oak leaves are starting to drop at an annoying few at a time pace…and a bumper crop of acorns still dropping too. I filled a 5gal bucket load to keep the foraging late-winter squirrels fattened up for the raptors, should they come back.

I never bag lawn grass during cuts, but could use a good de-thatching next month. I spend a good deal of time shredding autumn leaf piles, going over them a few times until they‘re small faster decomposition pieces, then put the bag on to vacuum them up for bed mulch and grass seed cover from grub damage. Sod webworms for the most part this year lost the battle.

All the bushes got trimmed and fall fertilizer put down on lawn. It is starting to get just a little cooler especially at night and grass will be going into hibernation soon. As for as heat it was a really rough summer. The new AC unit was NOT installed properly back in July. They will be here tuesday to remove ducting and start all over again. Hopefully they will get it corrected once and for all. Really looking forward to cooler weather and the holiday season, don't know why but i am. Lowes here has Christmas displays up! Before we know it we will be hearing carols on the radio!

Trimmed back the woodline from encroaching on the rear flower beds this morning so far. God with all the rain we have had the Skeeters are a nightmare. Good thing I do not even welt up or I would look like I have the measles.

On a good note I have swallowed so many I won't need brunch we have normally on Sundays.
