Greetings,
Today I felt like doing some live fire, defensive practice from my holster. Lane #9 is one of the lanes we "certified" people can use to draw from holster. You can remove the shelf and set up a little TV tray for your kit.
Today I used a couple boxes of 9mm Capitol Cartridge from 2A Warehouse. It's decent training ammo that sometimes has a great price. I've bought a bunch loose in ammo cans, hence the "repackaging".
I started off with a cold 10-10-10 drill, my fave. It was pretty average. I usually shoot this from low ready but it was from the draw today. First shot: 1.96sec, Tenth shot 6.59, trying to keep them all in the black. Since I left so much time on the clock I could've slowed down a little to let my sights settle more.
I shot a few more 10-10-10 drills (ten shots from ten yards with ten second par time) that were really average too. Then I slowed down for my last one, un-timed, from the draw, but with a couple seconds between shots.
I guess I can make it work as long as I don't go too fast. I'll need a little more practice. For my next bit I hung up a silhouette with a couple of 4" bulls and sent the target to seven yards for a few Failure To Stop drills, two to the chest, one to the head.
FTS #1: First shot - 1.89, third shot - 3.42.
FTS #2: First shot - 2.12, third shot - 3.65.
FTS #3: First shot - 1.87, third shot - 3.46.
For FTS #4 there was a little drama. Since I had loaded these mags with only 10 rounds I had a slide lock after the first hit. I performed an emergency reload, put two more on center mass, then one on the head. First shot - 2.05, fourth shot - 9.16.
Then I patched it up, sent it back out to ten yards, and did a few double taps.
Then I finished off the box with head shots at ten yards.
Then I put the XD9 away and got out the XDM Elite Precision, starting at ten yards.
I was feeling adventurous so I sent it out to fifteen yards just to see how I could do.
I dumped a whole magazine on the 8" bull (22 rounds) and managed to get them all inside the target. I don't think that's too bad for my first try at that distance.
Still, I bet I could do better if I took a little more time. While I was trying to concentrate, someone a couple of lanes over was causing many minor explosions. I walked over to take a peak and ask, "What kind of hand cannon you got there?" Brian was as friendly as could be and asked if I'd like to try his AK pistol. I'd never shot 7.62 so I said, "Sure, I send a couple down range." He had his red dot lined up pretty good. Those are my hits on his target. He was shooting at seven yards.
He also let me try his rifle but I just put one round downrange at 25 yards. It had iron sights. I asked if he'd like to try my Garrison. Brian was happy to. He put two rounds on the head at seven yards. Then I moved it out to ten yards and put the rest on center mass.
Yeah, I know, I let a few get away from me. This trigger is quite a bit different from the XD models I have. I have to keep that in mind. It's harder to rest on the wall after the reset with the Garrison. Sometimes I'll pull a double tap without intending to. Oops.
It was a productive practice session. I'll continue to work slowly building my speed while keeping my accuracy. Since Mrs. BassCliff is out of town, maybe I'll continue tomorrow. Woot!
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
