Transporting Firearms by Air

I travel a lot by air since I’ve gotten older. I have found that with my Negrini Cases I never had a problem on any of the airlines. I keep my Ammo in it’s original package. I keep the ammo in a lockable small container. Let’s see some of the ways you transport your Firearm by Air. I also check to see how gun friendly the State I am traveling to.

I don’t travel much anymore, but if I did I would cable lock my (empty) handgun through the trigger guard, through a small hole in the locked metal case and then to the large piece of luggage frame or secure loop to prevent any possible theft, in that the thief will need to take an entire bulky suitcase/luggage in order to abscond with just the handgun.

One thing here in Chicago O’Hare is the long walking distance to the baggage claim areas for many reasons either a far away gate, crowded travel days, problems with airline disembarking sometimes due to gate antics by jack*ss fools, which could cause baggage being placed on the carousels before flyers arrive and for extended periods though airline employees are present, there’s no real effective manner in which they can control who takes what.

If flying with checked bags in Chicago - never delay getting down to baggage claim regardless of the contents of your luggage. Airport homeless and baggage thieves are a big a problem here.

Some Airlines bring the Luggage to the baggage Claim dept. I just came back from Indiana and at Newark and Indianapolis they put Luggage on Carousel. I have been fortunate to never have a problem with theft. I always travel with a Old Glock that I wouldn’t be broken up if it was stolen or taken as evidence in a self defense shooting

I don’t put my ammo in a separate lock box . Have it in an original package and run a cable through the handgun and I’ve had zero issues getting called because TSA wants to double check it’s “unloaded”

I used to travel alot years ago by air and used an old black duffle and wired lock boxes to the inside bottom of the duffle so if someone want to take one of the boxes, they had to take complete duffle. Most of the time I would put pistol in one and ammo and mags in the other. I would position box with pistol under clothes but in a spot where I could slip it out to declare it and put declaration card in box.

in over 40 flights only had two issues flying US Air out of Philadelphia to Atlanta and Detroit. Both times my pistol box was pried and damaged, but not open. Both times US Air security stated the employee number on declaration card was not valid and stated they would review film to see who checked firearm in. They stated there was an ongoing investigation with ATF and I never heard anything further. Both times US Air did pay me for new lock boxes. They stated the employee may have been working with luggage handlers to steal firearms on ramp. Attached are photos of my duffle set up.
