Travis Pike debunks 7 tactical myths

I respect Pike's skill and experience, but I don't always agree with him. I pretty much agree with all of these though. Of course as a blanket statement maybe not so much. There are situations where I would ignore some of his advice here.

Although an ok article one person’s idea on debunking myths is just that, one person. I have no problem reading about anyones ideas on any subject I also take them with a grain of salt.

As you mentioned some good in the article some I don’t 100% agree with.

Thanks for sharing.

Well...to those of us who have been around the subject for a while, there may not be much to learn here, but to those who are newer to self defense and firearms, they might need to read this. For instance, my cousin just purchased a pistol for self defense. He didn't ask me for any advice, but in talking he revealed he was carrying with an empty chamber. I gently tried to educate him, but I don't know if it took. Recently, I've also seen numerous contributors to this forum declaring that they never dry fire their guns (not disparaging anyone, it's your business). So stuff is out there.

Maybe if we started a "Disinformation Governance Board" or something...

After purchasing my first gun it took me about 3 months of carrying it before I felt comfortable enough to chamber a round before putting the gun in my holster so give your cousin time.
As far as the dry fire myth I believe there are more important myths to be discussed and hashed out.

So, point by point…

Lights? If you know how to use one, they don’t give away your position. If you don’t know how to use one, it could…so learn how to use one.

Empty chamber: If you think you’re more likely to shoot yourself than be caught short in a deadly encounter…maybe carrying a gun isn’t for you. There’s great options in pepper sprays now.

Tampons: if you don’t have anything better at hand, they’re better than nothing. But why not get proper equipment (and the training to use it!) beforehand?

Dry fire: see the whole other thread…but if done properly (snap caps are cheap!), you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Leg shots: if the leg is the best target you have, take the shot. But other parts are better at getting a rapid stop.

Bigger Calibers: Look—all things being equal, bigger bullets make bigger holes, and the ammunition industry has been working for decades in making little bullets perform as well as big bullets. So, to say there isn’t a difference in how the bullets act is just untrue. That being said, the effectiveness in real life shoots, particularly with multiple hits made, is damn near negligible.

“Dutch Loading”: it’s silly. I call it “the preference of the terminally indecisive”. Get a good JHP and it will punch through just as much barrier as a FMJ. Additionally, it adds complexity into the system where there doesn’t need to be.
