testtest

Very controversial topic

Bolt carrier groups.

I seem to be collecting them. I have about 5 spares. Toolcraft NIB, Aero Precision, BCM. I'm seriously considering a SOLGW. Or Microbest.

The consensus on which one is best is constantly changing. I feel pretty good about BCM and Sons of Liberty because, while one or both of them are using Microbest supposedly, they both have exceptional QC procedures once they have them and they upgrade the springs and individually test each BCG rather than batch test.

So what are you guys using and which ones do you think are the best ?

And yes I know in all likelihood the $100 Toolcraft is never going to fail, especially after I put Sprinco springs in them, but that's neither here nor there.

Dang am I glad I haven't caught this fever, yet... 😉

Usin the one that came in the gun. lol i do have some old bolts for other guns.

i've used (depending on which framed ar) brownells, aero, jp and many others i don't recall from low cost to $600 bcg's (titanium). aero has been my go-to in many ways along with jp. are you asking about phosphorous or nitride and in which frame?
AR-15/5.56/223/300BLK. Probably Phosphate and Chrome lined. I won't be buying any more NIB. NP3 is intriguing but the guys who supposedly know say stick with phosphate, chrome lined.

I'm not an AR guy, so what makes one better than another? And why replace it to start with?
Out of spec carrier ( bolt tail run, I/D of the carrier) etc. leading to inefficiency. Improperly sealing gas key, crappy screws on gas key, crappy staking on gas key screws. Out of spec bolt, crap steel used for bolt, crap extractor and ejector springs, crap steel used for extractor. The big thing seems to be quality control. Most companies batch test them off the line so they really only test one out of a thousand or something. BCM and SOLGW, Sionics, and DD all test each BCG before they pack them up for shipping.

I may get a couple extra BCG's some day. don't know which ones yet. but i just can't stop buyin Turkish shotguns.
Here's a thought. The probability of Turkish shotguns becoming hard or impossible to get are pretty slim. We are one stupid law ( already being thrown around by Biden and many others) away from not being able to buy individual parts for ARs. Especially hated by antis is buying them on-line. Now a guy could buy extra parts for the bolt ( and I do) which would give you some cushion if the time comes when you can't get that kind of stuff and you blow one out. Or you can just buy a bunch of spare BCGs, which by the time you buy a bolt you're usually better than halfway to the price of a BCG.

I don't think I know anyone that has worn one out!
I do. And there is no shortage of internet morons who have. Not necessarily worn out, but bolts breaking, especially right around the cam pin hole where there is less steel. Usually the ones that are made right just wear out springs or break extractors and extractor pins or start having failure to eject due to weak ejector springs, etc.

As long as they work I don't care who makes them. Is there a big difference between manufacturers?
That is what makes this a controversial topic. Plenty of guys say not really. Toolcraft is inexpensive as far as BCGs go and kind of the standard.

My problem is I started watching these videos from a dude named Chad who runs School of the American Rifle. He takes the specifics of AR tolerances and spec to a whole new level of anal. No one on the planet from BCM to SOLGW to everyone else says anything other than "Chad is the guy with the most knowledge about ARs from a gunsmithing/armorer POV". I must have watched 100 BCG autopsies and not surprisingly a whole lot of BCGs that operate fine in guns are not efficient and prone to problems from tolerance stacking and have crooked gas keys, improperly torqued gas key screws and all kinds of things. He is always sure to point out that it is a test of one and not intended to apply to an entire line or company. He's also not sponsored by any companies and refuses to make recommendations on which products to buy. All his videos are done in such a way that he proves on the spot he isn't doing anything shady or incorrect. And his classes are the most sought out AR armorer classes in the world. And on top of all that he is just a hell of a nice guy.

Anyway, yeah, probably most of the problems that could happen with a BCG are not really a concern for me. I shoot a lot, but I don't shoot anywhere near as much as a lot of guys do. If you've ever shot out a barrel on an AR you can definitely wear out a BCG. My concern isn't really that so much I guess. I just am a guy who likes to have more than one of everything I will ever need. In some cases obviously like 10 of everything I need. lol
