You would think they would make note of exactly where this stuff is when they sink it. Of course it could drift a bit when it sinks but they would have a good idea where to look should they need to do research or something.

I would say that by sinking 15,400 feet before hitting bottom or in perspective a couple hundred feet shy of 3 miles I doubt it dropped straight down.
