[Video+Review] HK VP9: Better Than Glock?

When I was waiting for my first carry license , I had made my mind up that I wanted a Glock 26 for carry. Then I handled one in my local Gun shop. The grip on the Glock and I didn't get along well at all. I went in 3 different times trying to convince myself it would be ok. Nope , I still have not spent a dime on a Glock and I don't see Glock in my future.

Just like cars and trucks , there are brands that do and brands that don't work for each of us.

By the way , I have nothing against Glock other than that grip angle. Probably why I never bought one of the Ruger .22 autos.

Good article and video, thanks Anni!
"That VP moniker is courtesy of the German word “Volkspistole,” which translates to “people’s pistol.”
- Didn't know that!
The VP9 is the second HK pistol to have the VP moniker; first being the VP70–VolksPistole (Model of 19)70, which came in two flavors—the Z (“Zitizen”, or Citizen) which was a fairly unconventional DAO, striker-fired, blowback operated 9mm (and the first commercial polymer-framed pistol, with very high capacity-18-for the time); and the “M” (“Military”) which could have a stock attached, giving it 3rd burst fire capability. The M was designed for use arming the Volk in case of a Warsaw Pact invasion.

I’ve got a couple of the Z models—they are probably one of the most affordable of all of HK’s discontinued pistols.

Was an interesting read Hans, thanks!

Glock ergonomics suck, but they work. They have always felt like a 2x4 in my hand. In my opinion it is probably what cost them the military contract-SIG recognized ergonomics are important and exploited the Glock shortcoming, among other points. VP9 ergonomics are nice, and they work, I have been impressed with the ones I have seen.

My nephew has a large Glock collection and I have shot all of them. They function well enough but the grip angle makes them a "no go" for me. Not saying they're bad by any means but just didn't feel right in my hands. A VP9 could be a future acquisition however, if the price is right.

Edit to correct auto correct again!

I have owned pretty much ever model that Glock made before about 2010 in .45, 9mm, and 10mm…(all but the G18, actually…and I’ve shot one of those).

I don’t dislike them, at all; I still have a Gen3 G21, and I think the Gen 4/5 Glock 21 has a solid claim for the best polymer, doublestack, striker .45 going.

I moved away from them when I discovered I preferred pistols with hammers & safeties for carry; and I think Glock stood on its laurels for far too long before innovating (Gen 4/5, and where’s that rotating barrel design G46?); they’ve been surpassed by other designs (HK VP9, in particular; Sig P320 being another).

However, if you want an “erector set” pistol, the Glock platform is pretty much the way to go.

Overall…they’re good pistols. Hand me a G17 and say it’s what I’m gonna have to use in a fight, and I’ll be fine with it.
