Vietnam: The Short Range Shooting War

Good post Anni (y).
I was twenty when the Vietnam war ended, and before turning 18, the Selective Service (Draft), was abolished. As per the article, I too thought Vietnam was covered by either jungle or rice paddies. I got this impression from watching movies and current News footage of that time. It wasn't until I was watching the movie "Full Metal Jacket" with a buddy that's a Vietnam Veteran, that I remarked in surprised "I didn't know they had tank support and urban combat in Vietnam" to my buddy. He was kind of surprised too, saying "well I only saw jungle and rice paddies, flying Medical Dust Off". To this day, the man can't stand the sight of rice.

I was 15 when the war ended, sure glad it did, that was one scary time when you were getting close to your 18th birthday and the draft was still in effect.

Yeah, it was a bit. My lottery number was 184 during the last held draft. I believe that I recall it said, that under 100 you were pretty much ensured to be drafted. Two draft years prior when I was 15/16, my number was 18 (the 1970 draft for those tuning 18 in 1971). 😓
